How Celestia’s data availability sampling impacts rollup costs

Celestia's data availability sampling reduces deployment costs for rollups by using namespaced Merkle trees and Reed-Solomon encoding. Top rollups like Arbitrum and Optimism could save between $1 million and $17 million annually by utilizing this modular architecture.

How Celestia's data availability sampling impacts rollup costs

DAS and the TIA staking milestone

Celestia’s data availability sampling changes how rollups manage deployment costs. Light nodes sample small parts of erasure-coded blocks instead of downloading full blocks. Because two-dimensional Reed-Solomon encoding provides the redundancy needed to ensure that users can recover complete data, I find the namespaced Merkle trees useful because they allow a rollup to retrieve only the data associated with its specific namespace. This efficiency directly impacts deployment costs as blobspace demand surges. The $400 million TIA staking milestone reflects a network with increasing security. The current TIA price sits at $0.439, which is 97.89% below the all-time high of $20.85 reached in February 2024, despite the growing ecosystem and $400 million in staked TIA. Validators secure the network using proof of stake with the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT consensus. I note that the 21-day unbonding period creates a liquidity constraint for those who delegate TIA to these validators. The project, which began as LazyLedger in 2019, now relies on the leadership of Mustafa Al-Bassam, Ismail Khoffi, and John Adler. This leadership oversees a system where validators produce blocks and vote on data ordering.

Rollup economics and efficiency

Rollups save large amounts of capital by using Celestia. The Numia Data Lense shows that the top five most valuable rollups, including Arbitrum and Optimism, could have saved between $1 million and $17 million per year by opting for Celestia over Ethereum. As rollups find more users, transaction volume increases and blobs grow larger, which will increase these costs. I note that the 28 rollups currently building on Celestia have ample room to grow compared to the 150 networks currently tracked by L2Beat. I see Celestia’s approach to data availability as more efficient than Avail’s KZG polynomial commitments because Celestia requires no trusted setup.

Feature Celestia Avail
Consensus Cosmos SDK / CometBFT Substrate / BABE & GRANDPA
Data Scheme 2D Reed-Solomon / NMT KZG Polynomial Commitments
Trusted Setup Not required Requires universal ceremony
Block Time ~12 seconds ~20 seconds

Celestia captured approximately 50% of blob production, although that figure reached 95% earlier this year. This volume supports projects like Eclipse and Manta that utilize the network for specialized applications. Developers using Rollkit or Arbitrum Orbit can select Celestia as a provider to handle transaction data. I see the 1 Tb/s target for Fibre Blockspace, introduced in January 2026, as a way to accommodate this increasing load. Celestia also uses fraud proofs to address invalid state transitions or incorrectly erasure-coded data.

Tokenomics and scaling

The Matcha upgrade in November 2025 reduced annual inflation to approximately 2.5%. This rate continues to decline by 6.7% annually until it hits a 1.5% floor. I find the tokenomics stable even as the total supply reaches 1,178,391,32. Developers use TIA to pay for PayForBlobs transactions, and the network allocates 2% of block rewards to the community pool. The current market cap sits at $428.37M with a 24-hour volume of $61.43M. You should monitor how the 975,470,038 TIA in circulation reacts to the continuous linear releases from early backers. The project raised $156.5M across three rounds, including a $55M Series A and B in 2022 and a $100M Foundation raise in 2024. I see the current TIA price of $0.439 as a reflection of high volatility following the 2024 high. I wonder if the current validator set of 100 can maintain the network’s security as the demand for blockspace continues to escalate.
