LayerZero scaling and the reality of cross-chain messaging

LayerZero secures over $20 billion in total value while facing security challenges and ecosystem exits following Lazarus Group activity. The protocol offers low latency for DeFi through its Ultra Light Node architecture, contrasting with Axelar's proof-of-stake validator set.

LayerZero scaling and the reality of cross-chain messaging

LayerZero, Pellegrino, and the security fallout

Bryan Pellegrino leads LayerZero, a protocol that connects different blockchains using a relayer and oracle model. The Aptos Bridge uses LayerZero technology to move USDC, USDT, and ETH from the Aptos network to chains like Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Polygon, though users face one to five day delays due to 500,000 block confirmations. While LayerZero secured $120 million at a $3 billion valuation, the protocol faced security issues after the Lazarus Group poisoned internal RPCs in April. In the wake of these losses, Kelp DAO exited in May after losing $292 million, and BitGo moved $7.7 billion of wrapped BTC out of the ecosystem in August. Following these losses, $ZRO lost 31% of its value this year and dropped 88% from its December 2024 peak. Other entities like Solv Protocol, Re.xyz, and Kraken also exited the LayerZero ecosystem throughout the year. Aave paused ETH-pegged token markets from LayerZero as depositors sought exits. Mantle swapped out its Super Portal and Huma Finance declined to use LayerZero for its product launch. The Wyoming Stable Token Commission also dropped its token bridge. LayerZero warned teams using v1 libraries to migrate before the August 3 shutoff. Users can also bridge via SushiSwap or the Liquidswap bridge, which uses LayerZero technology in a collaboration with Pontem Network. Liquidswap requires up to three days for transfers back to the Aptos network. Pandra King users mint NFTs on one chain and send duplicates to another using the Zkbridge. Does the protocol recover its lost partnerships?

Comparing LayerZero and Axelar

Developers weigh LayerZero’s Ultra Light Node against Axelar’s proof-of-stake validator set. LayerZero minimizes on-chain verification to provide low latency for high-frequency DeFi protocols like Stargate and Radiant Capital. Axelar uses General Message Passing to enable complex cross-chain calls for applications like Squid and Osmosis. Axelar maintains 75 plus active validators to secure over $500 million in total value locked. LayerZero holds more than $20 billion in total value secured, while Axelar holds more than $4 billion.

Metric LayerZero Axelar
Architecture Ultra Light Node Proof-of-Stake
Supported Chains 70+ 65+
Message Latency ~2-5 min ~5-10 min
TVS $20B+ $4B+
Bug Bounty $15M $2M

LayerZero provides lower costs for Ethereum users, with average message costs between $2 and $10. Axelar costs range from $5 to $15 for Ethereum messages. LayerZero relies on a decentralized verifier network with 50 plus relayer and 15 plus DVN nodes, whereas Axelar relies on a unified network. LayerZero experienced one major exploit with Stargate in 2022, while Axelar reports zero major exploits. You should use LayerZero if your project requires the speed of the Stargate bridge, which processes thousands of messages daily with sub-30 second finality. Axelar supports a wide array of EVM and non-EVM chains including Cosmos and Algorand.

Ethereum volume and stablecoin dominance

Ethereum transaction volume exceeded Bitcoin volume in the third quarter, driven by growth in stablecoins and DeFi applications. Messari research shows the rolling 30-day average for Ethereum reached $7 billion, while Bitcoin stayed under $3 billion. This shift occurred as Bitcoin’s price climbed from the mid-$9,000s to above $13,000, yet Bitcoin volume remained steady. Tether remains the most traded stablecoin. Messari found that over the summer, it grew to surpass even Bitcoin with a rolling 30-day average transaction volume of nearly $3.5 billion. Tether has more than $16 billion in circulation. DAI, a product of MakerDAO, grew its supply by more than 600% between July and September. DAI users generate tokens by taking loans against cryptocurrency holdings in a decentralized system. This method makes DAI more resistant to censorship than Tether, which issues tokens through partnerships with large-scale customers like exchanges. DeFi applications use smart contracts to perform financial operations like issuing loans or generating interest on user deposits. Most stablecoin loans require users to provide cryptocurrency holdings as collateral to avoid margin calls.
