Midnight deployment and Cardano infrastructure friction
Cardano reallocated 70 million ADA to fund the Midnight privacy network using the Kachina protocol. While Cardano reached a single-block TPS of 436 in October 2026, Ethereum L2 ecosystems like Arbitrum One maintain much higher liquidity with $13.8 billion in TVL.
Cardano reallocated 70 million ADA, worth $25.7 million, from its treasury to fund the Midnight privacy network. Midnight uses the Kachina protocol to link public and private states, and users generate ZK proofs locally before they submit them to the blockchain. While Midnight mainnet went live on March 31, some ADA holders argue the treasury funds should strengthen the core ecosystem instead of funding a partner chain that might better serve networks with their own tokens. Midnight utilizes a dual-token model where NIGHT handles governance, and DUST acts as fuel for transaction metadata privacy. Developers use Compact, a TypeScript-based DSL, to build privacy-focused applications on the network. Developer activity remains high, with 735 commits across Hydra and Leios repositories on April 14 and 15, but ADA trades near $0.26 as analyst targets cluster between $0.37 and $0.57. For ADA to reach $5.20, Cardano would need to increase its market cap massively, as the current $9 billion market cap requires billions in fresh capital for every doubling. The Hydra adoption phase focuses on production feedback and enterprise deployments, but these reports do not provide figures for live Heads or transaction volume. Can the network move from research to widespread usage without more concrete evidence of active applications?
L2 dominance and scaling comparisons
Ethereum L2 ecosystems command significant liquidity, and Arbitrum One holds $13.8 billion in TVL while Base holds $11.2 billion. The Ethereum DeFi TVL share dropped from 63.5% in early 2025 to roughly 53% or 54% by May 2026. Cardano reached a single-block TPS of 436 on October 7, 2026, but this remains a localized achievement. The Ethereum L2 market shows maturity that Cardano’s scaling solutions lack.
| Network | Type | TVL (USD) | Median fee | TPS (avg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum One | Optimistic | $13.8B | $0.04 | 62 |
| Base | Optimistic | $11.2B | $0.02 | 89 |
| OP Mainnet | Optimistic | $5.6B | $0.03 | 34 |
| zkSync Era | ZK | $4.1B | $0.05 | 28 |
| Linea | ZK | $3.4B | $0.04 | 22 |
| Scroll | ZK | $2.1B | $0.06 | 14 |
| Starknet | ZK | $1.5B | $0.03 | 19 |
You already know that liquidity follows established users, so look at how Arbitrum manages 62 TPS as it maintains $13.8 billion in TVL. In contrast, Cardano’s single-block TPS milestone of 436 arrived after hitting 345 earlier that same day. While Arbitrum is the leading ecosystem, competitors like Base and Optimism provide constant pressure on market share. Base and OP Mainnet remain at Stage 0, and zkSync Era also remains at Stage 0.
Ecosystem competition and auction realities
Polkadot’s fourth parachain auction saw Parallel Finance secure its spot with 10.75 million DOT, a contribution worth $306 million. This win follows earlier auctions where Acala put forward a contribution of roughly 32.5 million DOT, and Moonbeam contributed 35.75 million DOT. Contributors to Parallel Finance receive the PARA token at a rate of roughly 25 PARA tokens per DOT contributed, with rewards distributed in nine different batches. Cardano faces a different reality where Hydra Heads act as off-chain state channels rather than general replacements for the main network. The Hydra 2.4.1 release fixed a vulnerability in the hydra-node software, but it also requires full transaction validation during snapshot processing. This requirement makes the process of accepting and recording a Head’s state more demanding for operators. Adoption depends on participant management and the ability to handle users who disconnect or fail to cooperate. The Hydra release lacks proof of broad public readiness, as it only shows that the project deals with operational issues that appear after a protocol moves beyond a controlled demonstration. Developers must still ensure that nodes can recover cleanly and that participants can agree on the settled state. In previous auctions, the Efinity NFT project reached sixth place with approximately 4.5 million DOT staked on its behalf, while other projects like Astar and Moonbeam have also secured slots.
