Midnight transaction spikes and Hydra scalability testing
Midnight mainnet transactions surged from 284 to 26,178 daily following permissionless smart contract deployment. While Hydra testnet simulations reached 807,000 peak TPS, Midnight aims to expand its reach through MPC vaults and cross-chain integrations with Ethereum and Bitcoin.
Midnight Network Activity
Midnight mainnet transaction counts surged after permissionless smart contract deployment went live in late September 2026. Daily transactions rose from 284 on October 1 to 26,178 on October 8. The Midnight mainnet processed over 1.09 million transactions by October 29, following the late September move to permissionless smart contract deployment which allowed developers to bypass the mandatory security reviews required on the preproduction network. I find the rapid increase in daily transactions from 284 to 26,178 to be a significant indicator of the shift toward an open developer platform. The NIGHT token price showed volatility. It dropped to $0.08 earlier this month before hitting approximately $0.04 on October 30. Midnight uses the Compact language, a TypeScript-based domain-specific language, to facilitate privacy-preserving DApps. This language handles three data states: public, private, and witness. Midnight also uses a dual-ledger architecture to separate public coordination from shielded state. The public ledger handles visible state, while the shielded ledger handles confidential state. NIGHT acts as the governance and utility token with a 24 billion fixed supply. DUST serves as the renewable resource for network activity. Developers use the Compact compiler to translate logic into cryptographic components for zero-knowledge proofs. This process ensures "validity without visibility" for the network. I think the focus on Compact makes development easier for web developers. Midnight targets privacy-critical verticals like DeFi, gaming, and regulated services. Will the current transaction momentum persist after the initial wave of permissionless deployments?
Hydra Scaling and Market Trends
Charles Hoskinson shared screenshots in December showing the Hydra network crossing 1 million transactions per second during a Doom gaming tournament. The official data shows a current transaction per second rate of 507 and a peak of over 807,000. I find the distinction between the 1 million target and the 507 current rate vital because the tournament used a testnet simulation rather than the Cardano mainnet. This high throughput relies on processing each game frame as a transaction. Hydra, which launched last year, functions as a Layer-2 scaling solution to increase transaction speeds and reduce latency. Hydra’s test outperformed Solana’s theoretical maximum TPS of 65,000 by over 100x. Critics like Goku noted that the transactions processed during the Doom tournament were part of a testnet simulation and not settled on the Cardano mainnet. Josh Marchand, a software engineer at Sundaeswap, claims Hydra allows for horizontal scaling until a user runs out of silicon or AWS vCPU units. Cardano’s total value locked on the platform nears $700 million. This growth coincides with ADA rising more than 250% over 30 days to a two-year high of $1.29. Hoskinson claims Midnight will 10x the MAUs, transactions, and TVL of the Cardano ecosystem.
Interoperability and the Midnight Roadmap
Nightmode introduced MPC vaults on October 20, 2026, to connect the Midnight private pool to major public blockchains. This allows users to deposit assets from chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum into a secure vault to access Midnight’s private features. The Sig Network launched on October 29, 2026, to facilitate asset migration between Ethereum and Midnight without using bridges or wrapping tokens. This system uses a multi-signature process to reduce friction for private interactions with Ethereum applications like Uniswap and Aave. I see this expansion as a direct attempt to capture liquidity from the Ethereum ecosystem. Midnight also works with LayerZero to enable lightweight message passing between different blockchains. This integration allows dApps on Cardano to communicate with applications on Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche. Midnight plans a cross-chain expansion to the TRON network in December 2026. The v8 mainnet release will enable developers to mint private custom tokens. The subsequent v9 upgrade will add composability, allowing contracts to interact with each other. Midnight aims to capture the $10 trillion market for Real-World Assets. I recommend watching if this dual-ledger design can maintain speed as the network grows.
