Starknet appchain growth and competitor hurdles
Starknet achieves Stage 1 ZK-Rollup status and expands appchain utility through Paradex, while facing market volatility following a 127 million STRK supply release. Arbitrum Orbit offers flexible EVM compatibility as Optimism encounters technical delays with its interop standard.
Starknet clearly leads in specialized infrastructure development. The network reached Stage 1 ZK-Rollup status, meaning it has no central operators and allows users to exit the system without permission. The S-two prover, which operates 100x faster than the current version, promises cheaper and faster proofs for all Starknet-based chains, and Paradex plans to use it for privacy-preserving trades. I find the expansion into appchains like StarkPay and Forge Agent convincing, especially as Paradex functions as the first live appchain. Opus also integrated U.S. Treasury yields into its staking system, which allows users to earn 75% of protocol revenue plus extra yield from T-Bills. I notice the network growth reached 1,166 new STRK wallets in a single day. Active addresses also reached 2,822 on October 11, which topped the 2,579 recorded on February 21, 2024. The team also aims for the network to become the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027. Starknet also expanded Bitcoin utility by making assets like Runes and USDC natively tradable and bridgeable. Additionally, the developer tool Broly provides an open-source, trust-minimized Bitcoin inscription tool for users with a Starknet crypto wallet. Users can even use DOG, the top Bitcoin Rune, as a gas token on Starknet via AVNU’s paymaster. For real-world spending, Argent launched the Lite Card with 0.5% cashback for USDC held on Starknet. The Karnot accelerator supports this growth, having recently hit 7,000 TPS on Ethereum with the SN Stack.
Arbitrum and Optimism trajectories
Arbitrum Orbit offers a different path for developers through self-managed Rollup and AnyTrust chains. These Orbit chains allow for EVM+ compatibility and gas price reliability, while giving developers the flexibility to choose their preferred governance structure. Developers using Orbit can adopt any improvements made to the Arbitrum Nitro technology stack without requiring approval from the Arbitrum DAO, which allows for features like permissionless validation and MEV capture. Orbit chains can also adopt permissioned access to control who accesses your chain’s data and who can deploy smart contracts. This technology supports existing chains like Xai, Syndr, Deri Protocol, Polychain Monsters, Sanko, Cometh, OURSONG, Superposition, and Meliora. However, Optimism faces technical hurdles regarding its interop standard. The op-devstack reveals that the interop activation timestamp exists only as a supernode parameter, which caused 22 failures out of 138 in the acceptance suites for the lokahi implementation. Because the chains get no Lagoon time at all in certain presets, the verifier and the proof end up on different rules. This issue exists because the presets describe interop activation as a supernode parameter rather than as a property of the chains. Will these interop delays hinder the Superchain’s expansion?
Market volatility and supply pressure
The market demonstrates high volatility for STRK despite massive network growth. STRK gained 213.82% over the past month, though it fell 27.9% in the last 24 hours. The October 15 supply event released 127 million STRK, which equals 3.37% of the released supply. This batch sent 66.61 million STRK to early contributors and 60.39 million STRK to investors. At the current price, the batch worth over $11 million adds pressure to a market already cooling from its peak. This distribution happens as part of a monthly schedule that sends STRK tokens to early contributors and investors through March 2027. You should watch how the top 10 addresses, which hold 7.09 billion STRK, react to this new supply. I see that the top 10 addresses hold their highest combined balance since April. I also notice that the intraday high of $0.1265 on October 11 marked the highest price since early December. This price spike followed a classic FOMO setup where new participants rush in after a huge rally is already visible, which increases the odds of a short-term retrace.
