Wormhole tokenomics face supply and competition tests
Wormhole's W token faces a scheduled release of 50.4 million tokens in October 2026 amid rising message volumes from HYPE integration. The protocol must balance these bi-weekly supply updates against competition from LayerZero, which has moved over $309 billion between blockchains.
Wormhole’s W token gained 30% over the past week as trading volume tripled in a 24-hour period. This price move follows the integration of HYPE, the native token of Hyperliquid, which uses Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers framework to move across Solana, Base, and Unichain. The W token currently trades near $0.0174. A scheduled unlock releases 50.4 million W tokens around October 16, which represents about 0.5% of the 10 billion maximum supply. At current prices, this release equals approximately $875,000 to $920,000. This supply event follows the W 2.0 update from September 2025 that replaced large annual cliff unlocks with bi-weekly releases.
| Metric | Wormhole (W) | LayerZero (ZRO) |
|---|---|---|
| Max Supply | 10,000,000,000 | 1,000,000,000 |
| Circulating Supply | ~6.599 billion | ~399 million |
| Security Model | 13-of-19 Guardians | Configurable DVNs |
| Recent Incident | $326M exploit (Feb 2022) | $292M KelpDAO loss (April 2026) |
| Protocol Revenue | Directed to Wormhole Reserve | Directed to ZRO buybacks/burns |
The W 2.0 plan directs protocol revenues from Portal and other applications into a Wormhole Reserve to support ecosystem growth. Wormhole also targets a 4% base yield for governance stakers. I find the lack of transparency regarding the accounting for these revenue flows to be a significant problem. The protocol does not provide public financial statements that reconcile on-chain data with off-chain revenue sources. While the W 2.0 update aims to smooth supply, the Foundation Treasury still follows its original daily 4-year schedule.
LayerZero holds the reach advantage
LayerZero has moved $309.6 billion between blockchains, which is over four times the $76.96 billion Wormhole has moved. ZRO has seen a 72.35% increase in 2026 so far. LayerZero also prepares for a December 2026 fee-switch vote to allow the protocol to charge fees on messages, which would fund ZRO buybacks and burns.
LayerZero manages its supply through monthly unlocks, with the next release of 23.63 million ZRO arriving on October 20. This release includes 10.63 million ZRO for core contributors and 13 million for strategic partners. Unlike Wormhole, LayerZero uses revenue from Stargate to fund ZRO buybacks. The protocol has already used $3.33 million to buy 2.37 million ZRO through August.
The security models differ because Wormhole uses a fixed set of 19 Guardians, while LayerZero allows applications to choose their own Decentralized Verifier Networks. If you need a single, fixed security set that no application can misconfigure, you pick Wormhole. If you want an application to control its own verification thresholds, you pick LayerZero.
Vulnerabilities and liquidity risks
Wormhole’s history includes a $326 million exploit in February 2022 where an attacker minted 120,000 wrapped ETH. Jump Trading, which bought Wormhole developer Certus One in August, replenished the lost ETH to restore bridge operations. In contrast, LayerZero suffered a $292 million loss in April 2026 after an attacker compromised LayerZero Labs’ internal RPC servers. That attack targeted the KelpDAO rsETH bridge because the application configured a single verifier.
Wormhole faces a concentrated risk because every application relies on the same 13-of-19 Guardian quorum. If the Guardian set fails, every application on the protocol fails simultaneously. I believe the high concentration of W in whale wallets, currently at 88% of the circulating supply, creates a risk of cascading liquidations if large holders sell.
The HYPE integration provides a narrative for traders, but it does not change the fact that W remains down 99% from its $1.60 launch price. While the 30% rally looks large, it barely affects the long-term downward trend. Will the increase in message volume from HYPE provide enough sustained demand to offset the continuous bi-weekly token releases?
