HYPE market data and institutional shifts

HYPE price and trading volume

HYPE trades at $75.97 with a market cap of $16.90B. This price puts Hyperliquid at rank 10 among cryptocurrencies. The price rose 89.18% over the last year, though it dropped 1.29% in the last 24 hours. Trading volume for HYPE reached $1 billion in the last 24 hours, which accounts for 10% of the circulating market cap. Hyperliquid holds a 26% market share with 24-hour volumes of $8.2 billion. In Q3 2024, the platform recorded total trading volume exceeding $5 billion with more than 9,000 active users. On certain days in that quarter, retail volume exceeded $20 million per day. Hyperliquid launched HIP-3, which allows protocols like Trade.xyz to launch perpetual futures for commodities such as gold and silver or equities like Apple and Tesla. Data from Artemis shows transaction volumes within the Hyperliquid layer-one chain jumped from 1.1 billion during the week ended on January 18 to 3.7 billion as of last week. FalconX reported that institutional investors rotate capital from Bitcoin and Ether into HYPE. Joshua Lim, global co-head of markets at FalconX, said HYPE acts as a liquidity hub for hedge funds. HYPE trading volume has surpassed Ether on some trading days. While HYPE reached a record high, on-chain data shows whale accumulation and profit-taking occurring at the same time.

Staking mechanics and supply

Staking rewards come from the future emissions reserve. The current estimated reward rate is 2.23% per year. A total of 117.9M HYPE tokens are staked, which makes the staking ratio 46.46%. The staking market cap is €8.0B.

Parameter Specification
Validator self-delegation 10,000 HYPE
Total unstaking time 8 days
Reward accrual Every minute
Distribution frequency Daily

Validators earn rewards proportional to their total delegated stake. The reward rate decreases as the total amount of HYPE staked increases. The Hyper Foundation proposed burning 1 billion HYPE tokens from the Assistance Fund, and a vote on this proposal occurs on December 21, with the results expected to be finalized on December 24 when staking begins. This burn targets tokens currently held in the Assistance Fund. December token unlocks will add 10 million tokens to the circulation, following the 10 million tokens from November. This total of 20 million tokens for the two-month period faces the 1 billion token burn. The protocol also includes an open interest rewards program that distributes 40% of net fees to users to support liquidity and encourage active trading. Transfers from a spot account to a staking account happen instantly, but transfers from a staking account to a spot account face a 7-day unstaking queue. Because of the 1-day lockup, users cannot access funds immediately after initiating an unstaking request. This unstaking process involves a 7-day queue to transfer tokens back to a spot account. Will the 1 billion token burn successfully mitigate the selling pressure from the December unlocks?

The founder and governance

Jeff Yan, the founder of Hyperliquid, won a gold medal at the International Physics Olympiad. He received a full scholarship to Harvard after studying advanced physics. In ninth grade, Yan participated in the U.S. Math Olympiad training camp. Colossus released a profile on Yan detailing his upbringing by his mother, an accountant, following his parents’ divorce. Yan told Bloomberg that U.S. regulatory oversight should apply to firms using the blockchain instead of the underlying network. The HyperBFT consensus algorithm operates in rounds of 100,000, which lasts approximately 90 minutes. A quorum requires more than two-thirds of the total stake to be honest. Validators may jail peers. Jailing stops a validator from producing rewards for delegators. This differs from slashing for malicious behavior. The Hyper Foundation provides $10M in grants to builders for the USDH sunset migration. This migration involves teams that integrated USDH and are moving to USDC. You should monitor your specific protocol for migration instructions.
