Lido’s October 2026 Withdrawal Shifts and Modular Staking Trends

Lido's market share fell to 25% this month following MetaMask staking withdrawals. The V3 upgrade introduces modular stVaults with tiered reserve ratios, while Rocket Pool maintains a 16 ETH requirement for node operators to ensure validator stability.

Lido's October 2026 Withdrawal Shifts and Modular Staking Trends

Lido market share and MetaMask withdrawals

Lido’s market share fell to 25% this month. This is its lowest level since March 2022. This contraction follows the MetaMask Staking withdrawal, which expects to complete its final batch of ETH withdrawals on October 7, 2026. In February, Lido’s market share was 32%, but it dropped to 29.6% in March after a wallet tagged to the HTX exchange withdrew more than 167,000 ETH beginning in June. WETH loan rates on Aave rose from 2% to 18% in a week, making popular leveraged staking strategies unprofitable. The queue of validators to exit grew from 1,920 to over 475,000 in a week. To manage such outflows, Lido utilizes a multi-node operator structure and a 6750 stETH temporary reserve fund to prevent interference. While the MetaMask exit follows an investigation into an infrastructure intrusion incident, stETH holders do not need to take action. The V3 upgrade introduces modular stVaults to assist institutional stakers. These stVaults allow teams to run custom validator configurations. They also allow teams to optionally mint stETH while remaining connected to the existing liquidity layer. This upgrade allows users to sift through an "open staking marketplace" where they decide their staking setup based on risk tolerance.

stVault tiers and Rocket Pool requirements

The stVaults architecture uses a tier system to manage stake concentration and correlated slashing risks. Node operators follow specific tiers that define the Reserve Ratio and the total stETH minting cap. Tier 1 carries a 5% Reserve Ratio and a 47,500 stETH cap, while Tier 3 requires a 9% Reserve Ratio and a 182,000 stETH cap. Tier 2 mandates a 6% Reserve Ratio and a 47,000 stETH cap, whereas Tier 4 requires a 14% Reserve Ratio and a 258,000 stETH cap. For DVT Vaults, Tier 1 provides a 2% Reserve Ratio and a 49,000 stETH cap, while Tier 5 provides a 4% Reserve Ratio and a 384,000 stETH cap.

Parameter Identified Tier 1 Identified Tier 3 DVT Tier 1 DVT Tier 5
Reserve Ratio 5% 9% 2% 4%
stETH Minting Cap 47,500 182,000 49,000 384,000

For non-identified Node Operators, a flat 50% Reserve Ratio applies. The fee structure includes an infrastructure fee of 1%, a reservation liquidity fee of 0%, and a liquidity fee of 6.5%. Rocket Pool provides a decentralized alternative. Users can participate with as little as 0.01 ETH. Node operators in the Rocket Pool network run validator nodes with a minimum of 16 ETH. This system pairs the 16 ETH from operators with ETH deposited by rETH users to create a full validator. Node operators earn consensus rewards and commission from rETH users for running the node. The rETH token allows stakers to maintain liquidity. They can use it in DeFi. This 16 ETH requirement differs from the ways other protocols manage validator capital. Do you think these varying capital requirements will change how institutions choose their staking providers?

Frax stability and Lido governance

Frax Finance aims to keep frxETH value closely tied to the price of Ethereum. The frxETH token targets price stability and provides high staking yields through integration with the Frax stablecoin ecosystem. This compares to Lido, where the V3 upgrade allows users to select staking setups based on risk tolerance via an open staking marketplace. The Lido V3 rollout includes a promotion where the infrastructure fee drops to 0% for identified vaults with a total value exceeding 250 ETH until March 31, 2026. The system also introduces a timelock mechanism between DAO proposals and execution to give stETH holders influence. Currently, only LDO token holders vote on changes to the Lido protocol. This gives LDO holders complete control over decisions that affect everyone in the ecosystem. If deposits in the escrow reach 1% of Lido’s total value locked, a delay period begins, and if deposits reach 10%, the proposal enters a "rage quit" state. LDO holders can use the dual governance model to respond to contentious proposals by locking their stETH, wstETH, or withdrawal NFTs into a special escrow contract. Frax Finance builds on its integration with the broader Frax stablecoin ecosystem to provide increased utility for the frxETH token.
