Pendle manages the yield tokenization market

Pendle holds $1.24 billion in total value locked as of September 2026, managing yield tokenization through Principal and Yield Tokens. Arthur Hayes' Maelstrom Fund utilizes Pendle's sUSDe pools for high-leverage yield strategies amid competition from Spectra V2.

Pendle manages the yield tokenization market

Pendle holds $1.24 billion in total value locked as of September 15, 2026. This figure follows a peak of $13.4 billion in September 2025. The protocol splits yield-bearing assets into two components: Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT). PT holders receive one unit of the underlying asset at maturity. YT holders receive the variable yield from the underlying asset until the expiry date. The protocol uses a Standardized Yield (SY) layer to wrap assets like stETH, sUSDe, rETH, or weETH. The Pendle automated market maker prices these tokens based on the time remaining until the maturity date. The liquid staking sector alone holds more than $50 billion in total value locked on Ethereum, which provides a massive yield source for protocols like Pendle to tokenize and optimize. Spectra V2 competes via yield curve tranching, while APWine V3 faces principal token liquidity fragmentation. The market currently favors Pendle’s liquidity despite competition from Spectra V2 and APWine v3.

Feature PT (Principal Token) YT (Yield Token)
Primary Function Fixed-rate principal redemption Variable yield capture
Maturity Value 1:1 with underlying asset 0
Risk Profile Underlying asset depeg Yield underperformance
Leverage Low High (up to 16x)

Maelstrom funds high-risk yield strategies

Arthur Hayes entered 2026 with a strategy of almost maximum risk. His fund, Maelstrom, focuses on crypto infrastructure and emerging decentralized finance tokens. Maelstrom reported profits from PENDLE in 2025 after seeing volatility in Bitcoin. Traders use Pendle to access Ethena’s basis trade yield through sUSDe pools. A $10,000 investment in YT-sUSDe controls the yield of approximately $166,000 worth of the underlying asset, which provides roughly 16x leverage on the yield rate. If Ethena pays 15% APY, the YT buyer earns $12,500 on a $10,000 outlay. A trader who buys $10,000 of PT at a 0.94 price receives 10,638 units, which they can redeem for 10,638 sUSDe when the maturity date arrives. Maelstrom is managed by the family office of Arthur Hayes and includes partners like Akshat Shrivastava and Adam Schlegel. The current market for yield derivatives in decentralized finance is heavily reliant on external sources like Ethena’s basis trade or the restaking rewards from EigenLayer.

New liquidity models address capital inefficiency

Pendle launched sPENDLE to improve capital efficiency. This liquid token replaces the multi-year vePENDLE lockups. Note that sPENDLE allows you to access funds within 14 days. Pendle uses 80% of its swap and yield fees to buy back PENDLE tokens from the market. This process reduces the circulating supply. Existing vePENDLE holders receive a boosted version of sPENDLE with multipliers of up to four times based on their lock duration. The transition period for these boosts lasts two years. An internal review showed only 20% of the PENDLE supply was active under vePENDLE due to complexity and long lock requirements. sPENDLE staking went live on January 20. New vePENDLE locks paused on January 29 when the protocol took a snapshot to calculate conversion boosts. Pendle also uses an algorithmic emissions model to replace manual gauge voting, which should reduce total emissions by 30%. Will Pendle maintain its lead as Spectra V2 expands its coverage?
