Pendle yield tokenization and the DeFi rate landscape
Pendle separates yield-bearing assets into Principal Tokens and Yield Tokens, reaching a $4 billion maturity tranche TVL. The protocol enables fixed-rate strategies through PT zero-coupon bonds while comparing yield curve fragmentation against alternatives like Spectra and Term Finance.
Pendle’s tokenization mechanics
Pendle’s maturity tranche TVL is $4 billion. The protocol separates yield-bearing assets into Standardized Yield (SY), Principal Tokens (PT), and Yield Tokens (YT). An ether.fi weETH position becomes two dated claims. 1 PT is the dated principal claim and 1 YT is the intervening yield and rewards. Investors who buy PT below its maturity value lock the difference between entry cost and redemption value. A YT buyer expresses a view that realized yield will beat the rate embedded in its price. For a position of 1,000 PT with an assumed 180-day term and an assumed PT price of 0.94 accounting units, the cost is 940 units. If execution costs are 4 units, the total outlay is 944 units. At maturity, the 1,000 PT redeems for 1,000 units, making the net gain 56 units. The Pendle automated market maker holds PT and SY. Direct PT swaps use that pair while flash-swap routing handles YT trades. This design concentrates liquidity within an implied-yield range and tightens as maturity approaches. The protocol collects fees from YT fees and swap fees. The trading-fee formula divides the fee tier by 365 and multiplies that by the days remaining to maturity. Liquidity providers receive 20% of swap fees. Of the remaining swap fees and all YT fees, 80% funds PENDLE buybacks. The remaining 10% goes to the protocol treasury and 10% goes to operations.
Comparing alternatives
Spectra is a comparison to Pendle through its use of ERC-4626 vault assets. I see yield curve fragmentation when I compare Pendle to Morpho Midnight, which matches a direct fixed-term loan better. Morpho Blue is an option for isolated variable-rate markets. Aave supplies a utilization-driven variable rate. Term Finance fixed-rate lending uses collateral auctions, while Pendle PTs are zero-coupon bonds. A buyer of Yield Tokens expects the realized underlying yield and rewards to exceed the rate already priced into the token, but the value of these tokens decays toward zero as the maturity date approaches. Does the risk of the underlying yield-bearing asset outweigh the convenience of the Pendle AMM? You should remember that Morpho, Silo, and Euler accept selected Pendle PTs as collateral, which provides extra utility to holders seeking to use their positions in lending protocols.
Risk and specifications
The liquidity depth of Pendle is the weakest part of the strategy. If the underlying exchange rate falls below its recorded watermark, PT redemption is less than the intended accounting value and YT stops accruing new yield until the rate recovers. A wstETH market is subject to Lido and Ethereum conditions, while an aUSDC market inherits Aave reserve and USDC conditions. An sUSDe market inherits Ethena and USDe mechanics. A buyer of PT needs an ERC-20 allowance if the router lacks one. If you are moving value between chains, you need the position asset and that network’s gas token.
