Pendle YT and PT mechanics explained

Pendle splits yield-bearing assets into Principal Tokens and Yield Tokens to allow for fixed-rate returns and leveraged yield exposure. The protocol manages $1.24B in TVL as of September 15, 2026, utilizing a custom AMM to price assets based on time to maturity.

Pendle YT and PT mechanics explained

The mechanics of yield splitting

Pendle clearly works by splitting yield-bearing assets into Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT). The Standardized Yield (SY) layer wraps assets like sUSDe or weETH to prepare them for splitting. Depositing 1 sUSDe into a pool with a March 2026 expiry mints 1 PT-sUSDe and 1 YT-sUSDe. PT holders surrender all variable yield to receive a 1:1 redemption at maturity. YT holders receive every unit of variable yield the underlying accrues, though the token itself amortizes to zero. A trader buying $10,000 of PT receives 10,638 PT-sUSDe, and if they hold this until expiry, they redeem the full amount for 10,638 sUSDe, which effectively locks in the 6.4% gap. For sUSDe pools, Ethena’s perpetual futures basis trade generates the yield, which typically ranges from 8% to 25% APY. If Ethena pays 15% APY, the YT buyer collects that stream. If funding rates compress, the YT decays. A $10,000 YT outlay controls $166,000 of underlying, providing 16x exposure to the yield rate. The custom AMM uses time as an explicit parameter to price these assets. However, PT holders face Ethena’s smart contract and basis-trade risks.

Traders use PT to lock in fixed returns. A trader can buy PT-USDe at 0.917 to lock in 8.8% APY. They can then deposit this PT as collateral on Aave to borrow USDC at 4% to 6%. This looping strategy earns a 2% to 5% spread on the notional exposure. The AMM curve adjusts as the maturity date approaches to ensure PT prices converge to par. The SY layer is what lets Pendle support a new yield asset by deploying one wrapper rather than reworking the AMM.

Market competition and Boros

Spectra provides a comparable PT/YT split on Ethereum and Base with RWA coverage. Pendle targets the $150 billion daily perpetual funding rate market using Boros. Boros launched on Arbitrum in August 2025 to allow users to trade BTC/ETH funding rate spreads. This product meets the needs of institutions that hedge funding rate exposure. Boros aims for over 20% of the $200 billion perpetual futures open interest market.

Asset Type Mechanism Outcome
Principal Token (PT) Buy at discount 1:1 redemption at maturity
Yield Token (YT) Pay upfront cost Capture all variable yield

Pendle holds $1.24B in TVL as of September 15, 2026, which is down from $2.08B at the end of Q1 2026. The protocol uses sPENDLE to distribute 80% of fees via buybacks every two weeks. sPENDLE holders can exit after 14 days without a fee or immediately with a 5% fee. The protocol also generates revenue from a 5% fee on PT issuance and an 80% share of trading fees from the AMM.

Maturity and risks

The maturity structure clearly works by providing a defined endpoint for every pool. PT discounts narrow as the expiry date approaches. YT pricing decays toward zero on a curve. Traders who roll fixed-yield positions must repurchase PT in a new pool. You should check the implied APY on the market dashboard before entering a position. PT holders face Ethena’s smart contract and basis-trade risks. If sUSDe depegs at expiry, the PT redeems to a depegged sUSDe.

YT buyers face asymmetric loss. If realized yield underperforms implied yield, the YT decays toward zero. A YT bought at 0.10 implying 25% APY loses money if realized yield is lower than 25%. This makes YT a yield call option with a 100% downside cap. Traders must manage the time decay of their YT positions carefully. As maturity approaches, the remaining yield window shrinks. What happens to the liquidity when the maturity date passes? Buy PT to lock in fixed returns.
