The shifting weight of Ethereum liquid staking

Lido dominance in the staking market fell from 75% to 62.8% over two years as 228,992 ETH entered the withdrawal queue. Competitive yields from MEXC and Binance challenge established protocols while legislative discussions regarding token classification and taxation continue.

The shifting weight of Ethereum liquid staking

The liquidity crisis in Ethereum staking

228,992 ETH sits in a withdrawal queue following the recent rally. The average wait time reaches 71 hours. wstETH lost 2.4% of its value to hit $4,446.47. Lido dominance in the staking market fell from 75% to 62.8% over the last two years. I find the current withdrawal volume for Lido quite concerning. The protocol holds over $34B in value locked. wstETH makes up 1.28% of these reserves. This spike in withdrawals arrived after ETH rallied above $3,800 before it sank to $3,692.72. Binance expanded its staking share from under 3% to over 20% since 2023.

Governance changes and legislative pressure

The co-authors of EIP-8363, Jerome de Tychey and Justin Drake, withdrew the tapered issuance burn plan from the Hegota upgrade. This proposal would have cut net yield from 2.6% to 1.2% if the staking ratio hit 33%. The authors planned an 18-month phase-in for the burn. Lido offered to lead the dedicated issuance process. The authors aim to reach CFI or SFI by April. Aave founder Stani Kulech called the withdrawal a "Great move". Anthony Leutenegger, a Lido delegate, called the decision a "Smart decision". The Senate works on a version of the market structure bill to address token classification. Although the Lido foundations exist in the Cayman Islands, the U.S. or EU may still claim jurisdiction if the protocol conducts business with individuals or companies located within those specific territories during its daily operations. The Congress already passed the GENIUS Act stablecoin bill. On July 20, 2026, Lido DAO closed Snapshot votes regarding penalties for Curated Module v2 node operators. The U.S. President’s Working Group on Digital Asset Markets recommended that the Treasury department publish guidance on taxation.

The battle for institutional yield

MEXC provides ETH staking rates between 3% and 5%. Because it maintains a 107% ETH reserve ratio, the platform stays highly competitive. Binance provides WBETH with an APY between 2.8% and 3.5%, which beats many other options. Coinbase yields for ETH sit at 2.3% in February 2026.

Platform ETH Staking APY
MEXC 3% to 5%
Binance 2.8% to 3.5%
Coinbase 2.3%

You already know that Lido dominance affects the whole DeFi ecosystem. MEXC uses Hacken for monthly audits and maintains a $100 million insurance layer through the MEXC Guardian Fund. MEXC holds a 158% BTC reserve ratio. Coinbase users move cbETH into the Base ecosystem to participate in DeFi lending. Bitcoin trades at approximately $72,900 while Ethereum sits at approximately $2,240. Will the Senate’s version of the market structure bill finally solve the tax ambiguity for liquid staking?
