ConsenSys separates infrastructure from MetaMask

ConsenSys split into two independent companies on September 9, 2026, to separate the MetaMask consumer wallet from its Ethereum infrastructure. The entity that rebrands as MetaMask remains under co-founder Joe Lubin as chairman and chief executive. The new ConsenSys entity, led by chief executive Mike Kriak and president David Cunningham, manages the Linea network, Besu, and Teku. This restructuring follows the September 2025 launch of the Linea governance token and follows a period involving layoffs and a legal fight with the SEC.

The Linea Association governs the Linea zkEVM network through a multi-tiered structure. This structure includes a board of directors, a general assembly, staff reporting to an executive director, and token holder representation. The Linea token allocation reserves 85% of tokens for ecosystem development, partnerships, and user adoption incentives, while 15% remains with ConsenSys under a five-year lockup. The Linea team introduced a protocol improvement proposal with decentralization solutions in October 2025. While founder Nicolas Liochon stated Linea should operate as a public good like Ethereum, the network still uses operator-run internal services for its sequencer, coordinator, and prover.

Linea Specification Detail
zkEVM Type Type 2
Fee Currency ETH
Token Allocation (Ecosystem) 85%
Token Allocation (ConsenSys) 15%
Transaction Throughput Goal 5,000 TPS
Gas Fee Reduction (Alpha V2) 66%

ConsenSys infrastructure handles institutional settlement through Besu and Linea. The company manages the Linea zkEVM, which uses Type 2 technology to execute EVM bytecode directly. Large institutions like Citi, DTC, and BNY Mellon use the Besu infrastructure. A June 2026 Citi report estimated tokenized assets could reach $5.5 trillion to $8.2 trillion by 2030. SharpLink Gaming announced plans to deploy $200 million in ETH on Linea using Anchorage for custody.

Lubin disputes centralized control

Joe Lubin expressed skepticism toward L2s that maintain control via a single company or a narrow group of participants. He argues the Ethereum Foundation must prioritize a decentralized architecture to ensure personal and platform sovereignty. This stance follows reports that the Ethereum co-founders knew the 2014 crowdsale involved unregistered securities. An insider, Steven Nerayoff, released audio recordings claiming the Ethereum Foundation relied on friends in government to avoid SEC trouble. Nerayoff also alleged that Lubin remains a massive ETH holder.

Lubin maintains that the network’s value depends on the neutrality of its base layer. This focus on systemic neutrality comes as the ecosystem enters a stage of convergence with traditional finance and artificial intelligence. The network faces technical pressures regarding validator behavior and internal governance.

Coinbase and Paradigm compete for users

Coinbase competes for users through its Base blockchain, which Jesse Pollak created and leads. Base uses the open-source Optimism OP Stack to provide a low-cost environment for developers. Pollak previously led all retail engineering at Coinbase, including work on Coinbase Pro and Coinbase Wallet. Base serves as the home for all Coinbase on-chain products, though anyone can build decentralized applications on it.

The market shows different scaling strategies for users. You might find the developer-centric approach of Base more interesting than the institutional focus of ConsenSys.

Base OP Stack and Coinbase ecosystem

zkSync Era Transaction throughput

While Linea relies on the ConsenSys distribution engine, Base relies on the Coinbase user base. Paradigm development dominance in the Reth client area creates a different technical trajectory for Ethereum. Does the concentration of infrastructure in companies like ConsenSys and Coinbase eventually limit the neutrality Lubin demands?
