Ethereum ETF options launch and liquidity divergence

SEC delays Nasdaq proposal

The SEC postponed its decision on Nasdaq’s rule change to allow options trading on BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust until Nov 10. This decision follows a Monday approval of options on BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust. While the SEC evaluates the potential impact of the proposal on market stability, Ethereum ETFs experienced over $79 million in net outflows on Monday, led by a massive $80.6 million single-day withdrawal from Grayscale’s spot Ether ETF. This single-day exit from Grayscale’s fund constitutes the largest since the spot Ether ETFs launched earlier this year. The SEC also postponed its ruling on a separate proposal by NYSE American LLC to list and trade options on the Bitwise Ethereum ETF, the Grayscale Ethereum Trust, and the Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust. This postponement follows a July 22 proposal that aims to amend existing rules for these products. The SEC uses its authority under Section 19(b)(2) of the Securities Exchange Act to allow for a deeper evaluation of market stability and risk. The agency is seeking more input from the public and experts regarding the proposal. This decision comes after the SEC granted accelerated approval for the dual Bitcoin and Ethereum Bitwise ETFs. The market shows volatility as investors respond to shifting liquidity.

Deribit skew reveals institutional appetite

Ethereum derivatives show a stark divergence from Bitcoin as spot prices hit their lowest levels since early May. ETH trades with a 10-15 volatility premium across the term structure. While Bitcoin’s volatility smile skew turned bearish at short tenors, ETH smiles skew remains neutral or moves towards calls at all tenors. You should watch how these shifts impact the $2,741 price level. ETH funding rates near 0.03% for the USDC-margined token indicate less negative bias than Bitcoin perps. ETH 25-delta risk reversals show a preference for out-of-the-money calls at all tenors. Ethereum’s price rose by 30% last week, buoyed by recent election outcomes and significant inflows into ETH ETFs. However, the market must reclaim the $2,800 level to maintain a bullish outlook. ETH annualized yields trade in a tight range between 9% and 13% across the term structure. Resistance levels for ETH include $3,641, $3,768, $3,895, and $3,974, while support sits at $3,499 and $3,457. While the market faces consolidation, the $3,439 price level remains a significant point of interest for traders looking to capitalize on the upcoming volatility. The Bitcoin derivatives market remains 279 times smaller than the equity and commodity market. Can these derivatives eventually push ETH toward the $4,000 target?

Hedging tools and regulatory limits

Cboe BZX submitted a proposal to list options on the Bitwise Ethereum ETF, the Grayscale Ethereum Trust, and the Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust. These tools provide investors with a lower cost way to gain exposure or hedge positions. The SEC imposes a 25,000 contract limit on the same side of the market to maintain stability. This limit stays below the 50,000 to 75,000 contract limits seen for other high-volume ETFs. The $38.8 billion in 24-hour trading volume for ETH suggests strong interest in these upcoming liquidity tools. BlackRock’s ETHA holds Ethereum managed by Coinbase and cash reserves by The Bank of New York Mellon. The trust focuses on providing exposure to Ethereum without engaging in staking or proof-of-stake validation activities. ETHA had 57.4 million shares outstanding and 93,352 shareholders by the end of 2024. The average daily trading volume for ETHA was over 5.3 million shares between July and December of 2024. The market value for ETHA reached $1.16 billion at that time. The eight approved issuers include Fidelity, 21 Shares, Franklin Templeton, Bitwise, VanEck, BlackRock, Grayscale, and Invesco Galaxy. Grayscale’s ETH ETF carries a management fee of 2.5% compared to the 0.2% fee for other providers.
