Ethereum price signals and liquidity realities
Ethereum staking participation has reached 19 million ETH while U.S. spot ETFs hold $11.99 billion in net assets. Market data shows ETH exchange supply dropped to 4.3% of the total circulating supply, though exchange consolidation can create false narratives regarding whale accumulation.
Ethereum tokenomics and value
Culper Research holds a short position against Ethereum because the December 2025 Fusaka upgrade supposedly weakened the economic structure. They claim lower transaction fees reduce the ETH burn rate. I disagree with this assessment given the network data. Daily ETH burn in February 2026 stays at 0.8% of the annual inflation rate. Staking participation reaches 19 million ETH, which covers two-thirds of the supply. Developer activity remains strong, supporting the long-term growth of DeFi products like Uniswap and Balancer. Blockfyre reports that miner balances have more than doubled since early 2018. Simon Dedic says that many participants agree current prices are too low to sell ETH. Gas usage hit a new all-time high of 61.67 million on May 23. This usage occurs when users interact with dapps like NFT games or decentralized exchanges. Higher gas usage indicates more dapp users or increased usage among existing users, which supports the long-term price of ETH. In 2022, Ethereum moved to proof of stake, which cut its energy draw by 99.95%. Critics argue that digital assets lack value, but utility from smart contracts provides economic weight.
Wintermute and market movements
Wintermute lost $162.2 million in DeFi operations to a hacker, though CEO Evgeny Gaevoy says the firm remains solvent. The breach likely used a bug in the Profanity vanity address generator. This tool allows users to create personalized addresses with predefined strings, but fundamental security flaws exist. A researcher estimated that a thousand GPUs could brute-force private keys of every 7-character vanity address in 50 days. I find the accusations from Optimism Collective users regarding Wintermute’s liquidity provision to be extreme. The user alleges Wintermute drains $OP in large volumes to favor ETH whenever the price of $OP tries to rise. This makes the marketmaker’s suitability for Optimism a point of intense debate among community members. This user argues that Wintermute performs no basic token support. Another report suggests Wintermute started a substantial sell-off of its assets, which may link to the CLARITY bill vote. While the Verus Bridge exploit resulted in a loss of 1,625.37 ETH and 103.57 tBTC v2, the attacker triggered a 10 USDC call to transfer reserve assets to the drainer wallet in under thirty minutes. The May hack saw $68.08 million stolen across 47 incidents. In the same month, the TrustedVolumes exploit resulted in a $5.87 million loss in WETH, USDT, WBTC, and USDC.

Supply and whale reality
The declining supply of ETH on exchanges does not guarantee a price surge. Santiment reports that ETH exchange supply dropped to 4.3% of the total circulating supply, which is the lowest since 2015. This movement often shifts assets into staking or DeFi protocols rather than simple cold storage. Bitcoin and Ether continue to dominate, with their combined market capitalization accounting for almost 66% of the total market. CryptoQuant researcher Julio Moreno explains that exchange consolidation creates a false narrative of whale accumulation. When exchanges move funds from many small wallets into one large wallet, trackers misclassify this as whale buying. This process hides the fact that many large holders are actually distributing assets. I see the reality of institutional absorption clearly in the ETF data. I’ll show you the recent ETH liquidity data: U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs hold about $11.99 billion in net assets. While short-term outflows of $90.94 million occurred in March, cumulative net inflows reach $11.71 billion. This data contradicts the idea that institutional demand is disappearing. Historical trends show that low exchange supply does not always precede a bull run. In 2022, supply on exchanges remained low while prices crashed hard. Bitcoin and Ether exchange supplies hit historic lows, but will this trigger a rally?
