Optimism Superchain growth and Arbitrum technical dominance

The Optimism Superchain captures 61.4% of the L2 fee market share through the OP Stack, while Arbitrum maintains a leading $18B+ TVL and utilizes Stylus for efficient Rust-based smart contract execution. Base transaction counts exceeded Arbitrum in both Q1 and Q2 of 2026.

Optimism Superchain growth and Arbitrum technical dominance

Optimism Bedrock reduced gas fees by 10% and cut deposit times to 3 minutes from the previous 10 minutes. This upgrade established the modular architecture for the Superchain, a network of OP Stack chains. Bedrock removes Layer 1 execution gas to reduce data fees and improves block production by allowing several transactions in a single block. Base, launched by Coinbase, drives massive transaction volume for the ecosystem. Worldcoin migrated to the OP Stack to improve its identity solution. The Superchain captured 61.4% of the L2 fee market share and processes 13% of all crypto transactions, while individual chains like Base drive significant volume through Coinbase’s massive user base. To align token value with this growth, the Optimism Foundation proposed using 50% of incoming Superchain revenue to buy back OP tokens. This mechanism started in February. Mode Network also uses sequencer fee sharing to help builders. The Superchain uses a shared validator pool for security and a communication layer for data exchange between chains. The Superchain includes chains like Base, Unichain, Ink, World Chain, and Soneium. Kraken’s Ink uses the OP Stack and received a sizable grant to support initial development. Does the superchain model effectively prevent users from moving to standalone chains?

Arbitrum Technical Dominance

Arbitrum maintains the highest transaction volume and a $18B+ TVL. Arbitrum Stylus allows developers to write smart contracts in Rust, which compile to WebAssembly. Because Stylus compiles Rust code to WebAssembly, developers can execute compute-heavy logic onchain using 90% less gas than they would use when running the same workload through Solidity. This provides an advantage for backend engineers who require verifiable execution without learning Solidity. Arbitrum One and Nova together process several hundred million transactions monthly. You should realize that Arbitrum remains the leader in absolute sequencer revenue. RedStone ported verification logic from Solidity to Stylus to save gas on heavy computation tasks like iterative math and weighted scoring. Stylus programs operate alongside existing Solidity smart contracts by sharing the same state. Arbitrum supports DeFi protocols like GMX, Uniswap, and Aave. Developers use the Cargo Stylus CLI Tool to deploy programs.

Metric Arbitrum Optimism
TVL $18B+ $7B+
Peak TPS 40,000+ 2,000+
Gas (Simple Swap) $0.05 – $0.30 $0.01 – $0.05

L2 Fragmentation and Economics

The L2 market remains fragmented among optimistic rollups and ZK rollups. zkSync Era holds the largest ZK rollup TVL, but it faces high proof generation costs that optimistic rollups avoid. These costs compress sequencer margins for ZK networks. Arbitrum generates the most absolute revenue, while Base transaction counts exceeded Arbitrum in both Q1 and Q2 of 2026. Optimism Mainnet sequencer revenue grows more slowly because Base cannibalized much of its volume. Base generates revenue that Coinbase describes as a growing contribution to its technology-segment reporting. In 2026, the gap between ZK and optimistic rollup economics narrowed as hardware efficiency improved, but ZK proof costs remains a constraint. Base TVL is $5.49B. Optimism Mainnet TVL is $7B+. Arbitrum One TVL is $1.37B. zkSync Era uses SNARK validity proofs and has a withdrawal delay of approximately 24 hours. Optimism and Arbitrum require 7 days for withdrawals via their native bridges. Arbitrum One DEX swaps cost $0.05 to $0.30, whereas Base and Optimism DEX swaps cost between $0.01 and $0.05.
