Rust efficiency and the Arbitrum Stylus expansion
The ArbOS 61 Elara upgrade increases Stylus contract capacity to 96 KB, reducing computation costs by 10x compared to the EVM. Arbitrum's ecosystem growth includes 478 million transactions in the first half of 2026 and the launch of the Robinhood Chain.
TaxMate’s Metric Vault uses the Stylus SDK to compile Rust into WebAssembly, which executes on the Arbitrum Stylus chain. This specialized DeFi instrument manages a portfolio of USDC and WETH via Token Metric API signals. The use of Stylus reduces computation costs by 10x and memory costs by 100x compared to the Ethereum Virtual Machine. The ArbOS 61 Elara upgrade, which went live on August 20, 2026, increased Stylus contract capacity from 24 KB to 96 KB. This expansion allows developers to run heavier Rust and C++ smart contracts directly on Arbitrum. Users receive Metric tokens representing their share of the vault’s assets when they deposit. The Stylus SDK also allows one contract to call another regardless of whether it was written in Solidity or another language. This flexibility supports the growing volume of transactions on Arbitrum, which reached 478 million in the first half of 2026. The ArbOS 61 Elara upgrade also introduced a BaseFeeManager contract to allow base fees to adjust between 0.01 and 0.10 gwei.
BOLD permissionless validation and security
Offchain Labs released the BOLD protocol to provide permissionless validation across the Arbitrum ecosystem. This protocol replaces the previous system where only allow-listed validators could participate in network security. A single honest validator can now defend the network against denial-of-series attacks within a fixed time window. This window includes two 6.4-day challenge periods and a 2-day grace period for the Security Council to intervene. Optimism Bedrock relies on the Cannon system for single-round fault proofs, but users face a 7-day delay when withdrawing from the native bridge to Ethereum. BOLD mitigates the risk that a malicious actor might prolong disputes to delay state confirmations. Arbitrum Orbit chains may choose to adopt BOLD to reap the security benefits of this new dispute resolution protocol.
| Feature | Arbitrum BOLD | Optimism Bedrock |
|---|---|---|
| Proof System | BOLD (multi-round) | Cannon (single-round) |
| Validation | Permissionless | Permissioned (via Cannon) |
| Withdrawal Delay | 7 days | 7 days |
Enterprise revenue and sequencer control
Robinhood, a $100B fintech with 28 million users and $307B in AUM, became the world’s largest publicly listed fintech with its own blockchain and chose the Arbitrum Platform to build it as of July 2026. The Robinhood Chain is a standalone L2 built on the Arbitrum stack. This chain remits 10% of its net revenue to the Arbitrum ecosystem, which provides 8% to the DAO and 2% to the developer guild. Robinhood Chain also saw $808M in 24h DEX volume within two weeks of its launch. LG Electronics also uses the Arbitrum Platform for its onchain advertising network. In contrast, Coinbase operates the Base sequencer, which centralizes revenue and control within a single entity. Arbitrum Orbit provides developers the freedom to modify stack configurations, including custom gas tokens, alternative data availability, and novel sequencing mechanisms. You should account for the 10% fee-sharing model when evaluating these Orbit chains.
Arbitrum’s growth includes 2,000 tokenized real-world assets deployed and monthly stablecoin transfer volumes exceeding $60B. While Base captures Ethereum L2 mindshare through its connection to the Coinbase ecosystem, Arbitrum prioritizes a barbell strategy. This strategy balances a liquid public chain, Arbitrum One, with purpose-built chains for enterprises. PayPal’s PYUSD peaked at $428M on Arbitrum in the first quarter of 2026. Cash App also added support to send and receive USDC via Arbitrum. The ecosystem GDP reached $206 million in the first half of 2026. This growth was driven by the convergence of traditional finance and onchain finance. For the first half of 2026, the collective gross margin on protocol revenue was 97%. Does the revenue from the Robinhood Chain provide enough to offset the volatility of the broader market?
