Scaling the Ethereum Layer 2 race

Arbitrum holds $21 billion in bridged assets across its Orbit chains, maintaining dominance over competitors like Coinbase's Base. Technical advancements such as the Stylus upgrade and BoLD dispute resolution protocol distinguish its WASM-based execution from Optimism.

Scaling the Ethereum Layer 2 race

Arbitrum’s 49 announced Orbit chains currently hold $21 billion in bridged assets. This total exceeds the $5 billion TVL recorded by Coinbase’s Base network in August 2026. Arbitrum maintained user dominance throughout the scaling wars, as its daily transactions surpassed Ethereum on February 21, 2023. While Optimism launched in January 2021 and held a whitelist until December 2021, Arbitrum opened to the public in August 2021. This early access allowed Arbitrum to average 2.5x more active addresses than Optimism throughout 2022. The competition remains intense, with GMX leading Arbitrum with $514 million in TVL, while Velodrome holds $283 million on Optimism. Arbitrum also reported 215 developers in late 2022, compared to 183 on Optimism. The Nitro stack upgrade in August 2022 increased throughput by 7% to 10% and slashed gas fees. Following this, transactions increased on August 31, 2022, and the 2022 Arbitrum Odyssey NFT program drove further engagement. Arbitrum demonstrated greater TVL resilience than Optimism during the 2022 market turmoil. You should observe how these specific technical diversions define the current market share. Arbitrum’s ability to scale via Orbit chains distinguishes it from the modular approach seen in Optimism’s Superchain.

Technical divergence and Stylus

The Arbitrum Security Council paused new Stylus contract activations on Arbitrum One and Nova on October 2, 2026, because hand-crafted WebAssembly programs threatened to degrade network performance through excessive and highly irregular computational processing tasks. Existing Stylus contracts continue to function because the council only raised the activation gas requirement. The ArbOS 61 upgrade renewed all active contracts on Arbitrum One until August 20, 2027. This emergency action also installed the OspSoundnessGuard to backstop the BoLD dispute system. If conflicting proofs pass the single-step verification, the PauseExecutor contract halts settlement to Ethereum.

Feature Arbitrum Stylus Optimism Bedrock
Programming Languages Rust, C, C++, Solidity Solidity
Execution Environment WASM and EVM Ethereum EVM
Scaling Framework Nitro / Orbit OP Stack
Dispute Resolution Multi-round fraud proofs Single-round fraud proofs

The BoLD protocol, released in February 2025, introduced permissionless validation to the ecosystem. BoLD uses a time-bound dispute resolution mechanism that resolves disagreements within about 12 days. This differs from Optimism’s single-round proofs. The Stylus upgrade, which launched in September 2024, allows developers to use Rust, C, and C++ through a WASM-based execution environment. This creates an EVM+ environment where Solidity contracts can call Rust-based contracts via the Stylus SDK. Using Stylus reduces computation costs by 10x and memory costs by 100x. On the BoLD testnet, validators must stake 150 Sepolia ETH to post assertions and 100 Sepolia WETH to open challenges.

Economic mechanics and the competitive landscape

Timeboost, an optional transaction ordering policy introduced in mid-April 2025, generates revenue through an auction-based express lane. This mechanism adds 250 ms of latency and has generated $3.63 million in revenue. High-frequency DeFi traders utilize this lane for 20% to 30% of daily DEX volume on Arbitrum. The DeFi Renaissance Incentive Program, which launched on September 3, 2025, provides 80 million ARB in incentives through Merkl to bolster liquidity. Season one targets leverage looping using assets like sUSDC, weETH, and wstETH. Entropy Advisors manage this $40 million initiative. Meanwhile, Coinbase’s Base network expanded its ecosystem in August 2026 by launching 25 new products. The August expansion included tokenized S&P 500 shares, the MXNB stablecoin, and the ZARU stablecoin. The network also introduced the Credifi unsecured lending platform and the AWS AgentCore Payments standard, which uses the x402 payment code to allow AI agents to pay for services. Base manages assets from Coinbase’s 110 million verified users and $80 billion in assets. Can the industry reconcile the efficiency of WASM-based execution with the security risks of hand-crafted code? Arbitrum’s technical lead remains the decisive factor in the scaling wars.
