The rise and dominance of Lido’s stETH

Lido's stETH reached a $22.624 billion market capitalization by early 2024, providing critical liquidity for Ethereum validators. The protocol transitioned to modular infrastructure with Lido V3 in 2026, introducing stVaults to compete with Rocket Pool and Frax.

The rise and dominance of Lido's stETH

Lido launched in December 2020 and solved the 32 ETH minimum requirement for Ethereum validators. The protocol issued stETH to users, providing liquidity for DeFi applications like Aave and MakerDAO. I find the protocol’s scale impressive. By January 10, 2024, stETH reached a market capitalization of $22.624 billion, a figure that accounted for 15% of the entire liquid staking market. This liquidity allowed users to avoid the indefinite lockup of the Beacon Chain. The Shanghai upgrade in April 2023 finally enabled withdrawals of staked ETH, which allowed validators to redeem their principal and rewards after years of indefinite locking on the Beacon Chain, though many users still preferred DEX swaps for instant liquidity. Analysts watched for selling pressure from the Celsius bankruptcy, as the lender held 158,176 ETH. Early funding included $2 million from Semantic Ventures and ParaFi Capital in 2020, followed by $70 million from Andreessen Horowitz in March 2022. Lido maintains a 10% commission on all income received. LDO functions as the governance token, managing the DAO treasury and node operator registries.

The 2026 Modular Pivot and Market Realities

Lido V3 arrived on January 30, 2026, to transition the protocol into modular infrastructure. This version introduced stVaults, which provide builders with custom validator configurations and options to mint stETH. I think the shift toward infrastructure makes sense for long-term growth. Early adopters included Linea, Nansen, and P2.org. These vaults charge a 1% infrastructure fee, while the total fee for minting stETH reaches approximately 7.5%. Lido Earn also launched in March 2026 with EarnETH and EarnUSD. EarnETH targets a 3.3% APY by deploying stETH across DeFi, and EarnUSD targets a 5.1% APY in USD terms. You should consider the smart-contract risk when using these products. In February 2026, ETH dropped to $2,020, which pressured DAO revenue. The DAO proposed a $20 million LDO buyback in March 2026, but this requires ETH to trade above $3,000 and annual revenue to exceed $40 million. 2025 spending fell 10% compared to the previous year due to ETH outflows and APR compression. Lido’s market share stood at 24% in May 2026.

Feature Specification
Lido Fee (Classic) 10% of rewards
stVaults Infra Fee 1%
stVaults Minting Fee ~7.5%
LDO Buyback Cap $10 million

Competition and Decentralization

Rocket Pool and Frax compete for market share through specialized validator management. Rocket Pool manages minipool decentralization via the LEB upgrade. This upgrade allows both 16 ETH and 8 ETH deposits to share a single queue. Node operators can also manage their credit balance to cover shortfalls in ETH. Rocket Pool aims to set node fees at 14% to balance validator attraction and rETH APR. Will the Frax validator set ever reach the same level of decentralization as Rocket Pool? Frax uses a different model where the Frax Core Team controls all validator nodes. They run these nodes in geodiversified data centers across North America and Europe using AWS and OVH. sfrxETH holders earn boosted rewards because the protocol diverts 90% of all ETH revenue to sfrxETH vault stakers. The remaining 8% goes to the Frax Protocol Treasury, while 2% covers an insurance fund.
