Avalanche faces intense pressure from Sonic and Berachain

Avalanche processes 16 million weekly transactions while facing technical competition from Fantom Sonic's Carmen DB and Berachain's proof-of-liquidity model. Institutional adoption via the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index ETF and Deloitte partnerships provides a foundation for AVAX growth.

Avalanche faces intense pressure from Sonic and Berachain

Institutional scaling and DeFi utility

Avalanche processes 16 million weekly transactions with a fee of 0.00036 AVAX. The network inclusion in the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index ETF brings institutional money to the asset. Deloitte uses the Avalanche blockchain to build disaster relief platforms for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and local governments. This partnership aims to improve security and accuracy for reimbursement applications. The Avalanche Foundation negotiated an agreement to repurchase 1.97 million AVAX tokens from the Luna Foundation Guard to enhance its ability to support the ongoing growth and development of the entire Avalanche ecosystem. I find the scale of these institutional moves more significant than the hype surrounding smaller AI projects. The ecosystem contains over 150 coins. Benqi provides lending and liquid staking with a total value locked of $232 million. GMX allows for leverage trading up to 50x and saw its token rise 50% over the last year. TraderJoe provides liquidity through its DEX. Kalao uses the network for an NFT marketplace with metaverse integration. Ryval Market allows users to buy and sell tokens representing litigation financing shares. Penguin Finance uses Igloos and Nests for yield farming and staking. Grip Finance provides a lending platform with embedded options contracts. KNIT Finance creates cross-chain wrappers for assets. The Avalanche Foundation also raised $230 million through a private token sale with participants including Polychain and Three Arrows Capital.

Sonic and Berachain technical competition

Fantom Sonic aims for 2,000 transactions per second in realistic scenarios and 10,000 transactions per second for asset transfers. The Carmen DB mechanism reduces data storage requirements for validators by 95%. This upgrade moves the network from Fantom Opera to the Sonic Chain. Sonic also uses the Fantom Virtual Machine to execute transactions more efficiently than the old EVM. The Lachesis consensus mechanism improved the performance to handle larger transactions by increasing the minimum number of validator quorums. Users migrate FTM to Sonic at a 1:1 rate. I think the technical improvements in the Carmen DB make the Sonic transition a serious threat to existing L1 dominance. Berachain uses a three-token model with BERA, BGT, and HONEY. Validators stake BERA to propose blocks and earn BGT rewards. Users exchange BERA for BGT at a 1:1 ratio to participate in governance. This BGT token is a soulbound, non-transferable asset. BERA prices rose 14% after the proof of liquidity rewards went live. The BEX protocol integrates these liquidity rewards. Liquidity providers stake tokens in reward vaults to earn BGT rewards based on their specific contributions to the network ecosystem. The BEX protocol uses CrocSwapDex for all operations between users and the pool, including adding and removing liquidity. It utilizes eight different types of Path contracts, including HotPath for single-step exchanges and WarmPath for liquidity provider operations.

Verification and market position

Deloitte applies professional audit and assurance standards to scrutinize blockchain protocols. The firm uses its Rubix by Deloitte team to test these procedures on permissioned Ethereum networks. This work helps quantify how auditors provide assurance on blockchain-based applications. I find the efficiency of the Sonic Carmen DB more impressive than the current state of the Avalanche ecosystem. You should notice that the competition intensifies as Berachain moves toward a more open, application-first ecosystem where projects drive growth through proof of liquidity. I would skip any project that lacks the institutional backing seen in the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index ETF. The Berachain BEX protocol uses CrocSwapDex and Path contracts to manage liquidity and token swapping. Will the growing number of validators on the Sonic network create enough pressure to lower fees below the 0.00036 AVAX level seen on Avalanche?
