Bernstein’s Bitcoin price target and the institutional reality

Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani revised their Bitcoin price target to $200,000 as institutional ownership within spot ETFs grew to 28%. This shift toward sophisticated participants and massive holdings like BlackRock's $84 billion IBIT creates a new liquidity paradigm.

Bernstein's Bitcoin price target and the institutional reality

Bernstein analysts revised their Bitcoin price target to $200,000 as the market matures. I believe this target reflects a reality where institutional infrastructure supports price action more than retail speculation. Even as Bitcoin fell 50% from its $126,279 peak in October 2025, the lack of systemic failures at exchanges or custodians suggests a healthier market structure. Bitcoin currently trades near $69,400 because it found a floor around $62,500 in late February. While capital moved toward AI-related equities this year, Bernstein researchers led by Gautam Chhugani argue that Bitcoin’s long-term store-of-value thesis remains intact. The current market structure relies on sophisticated participants rather than the volatile momentum-driven flows that characterized previous cycles. Many participants preemptively lock in profits in anticipation of market weakness, which can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. This correction is shallow compared to the 60% to 70% drops typical of past bear phases. Bitcoin’s price crossed $123,000 earlier this year as major financial firms increased their involvement. At the time of writing, $1.8 billion worth of Bitcoin shorts were liquidated, while $1.12 billion in shorts face liquidation at $125,000.

The concentration of assets

The concentration of assets within a few major providers creates a new liquidity paradigm. BlackRock’s IBIT holds over $84 billion in Bitcoin, commanding a massive share of the $150 billion held in total U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. The percentage of institutional investors within these funds grew from 20% in late 2024 to 28% today. This shift toward institutional ownership reduces the risk of deep collapses. While investors sold approximately 340,000 BTC, worth about $38 billion, over the last six months, inflows of $34 billion into spot ETFs and corporate treasuries helped offset this pressure. The total assets under management for these funds reached $125 billion despite a recent $3 billion outflow, while public companies collectively hold 858,723 BTC, which accounts for 5.6% of the total 21-million-unit supply. According to Glassnode data, over 60% of the circulating supply remains in the hands of long-term participants.

Asset/Entity Metric
Total Bitcoin ETF Assets $150 billion
BlackRock IBIT Net Assets $84 billion
Institutional ETF Share 28%
Strategy BTC Holdings 762,099 BTC

Banking competition and retail access

Traditional finance firms compete to capture this institutional demand through specialized products and platform integrations. Goldman Sachs filed a preliminary prospectus for the Goldman Sachs Bitcoin Premium Income ETF to secure its place in the market. The Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) launched on April 8, 2026, and saw $183.6 million in cumulative net inflows by April 24, 2026, and this shows that late entrants can still find success. Morgan Stanley also seeks to bring crypto trading to ETrade via a partnership with Zerohash, though this project remains in the early planning stages. You might wonder if the delay in the ETrade rollout hampers their competitive edge against firms like Robinhood. Robinhood derived nearly 20% of its revenue, or $600 million in 2024, from token trading across dozens of assets. Morgan Stanley’s strategic investment in Zerohash, a fintech firm that recently secured $104 million in funding, provides the liquidity and secure custody required for a successful retail launch. This move puts the bank in direct competition with exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken. Other brokerages like Charles Schwab and SoFi Technologies are also exploring these avenues, with SoFi planning a return to its crypto trading roots.
