Integrating Kaiko Market Data for Liquidity and Slippage Analysis

Developers use the dlt Python library and Kaiko API to analyze market liquidity and slippage. During the August volatility, BTC-USD slippage on US exchanges tripled, while Bitstamp by Robinhood achieved a security score of 94.1 in Kaiko's Q2 2025 benchmark.

Integrating Kaiko Market Data for Liquidity and Slippage Analysis

Integrating Kaiko Market Data

Developers integrate Kaiko market data by using the X-Api-Key header in requests sent to https://{region}.market-api.kaiko.io/v3. The dlt Python library manages authentication, pagination, and schema evolution when users load data into DuckDB or Snowflake. You should add your API key to a .dlt/secrets.toml file to prevent hardcoding credentials. This setup allows for the retrieval of instruments, trades, and derivatives contract details through a single, normalized API. The library uses the rest_api_resources function to yield resources such as historical prices or exchange codes. For instance, the instruments resource uses the /v1/instruments endpoint with the data selector. The API also provides exchange codes via /v1/exchanges and historical trades via the /v3/data/trades.v1/exchanges/{exchange}/{instrument_class}/{instrument}/trades endpoint. To start, users run uv init and uv add "dlt[hub]" to set up their environment. This allows for the loading of various endpoints such as derivatives_contract_details or historical_prices into destinations like PostgreSQL, BigQuery, or Redshift. Users can also load historical price data through the /v1/historical_prices endpoint to provide context for backtesting trading models or analyzing historical price movements across various instruments.

Market Liquidity and Slippage

Market volatility in August caused Bitcoin prices to drop 20% below $50,000, which tripled BTC-USD slippage on US exchanges within hours. KuCoin BTC-EUR pairs saw slippage exceed 5% during the sell-off. Kaiko’s slippage calculator simulates the price impact of different sell or buy order sizes across multiple venues. Because the Mt. Gox estate still holds over $2.72 billion to redistribute to creditors, market participants use slippage analytics to evaluate how large sell orders might impact the current liquidity of major exchanges. On August 5th, as US job market data became public and recession rumors grew, BTC-USD slippage on major US exchanges tripled. Zaif’s BTC-JPY pair experienced the highest slippage on that day. The US government holds over 200k BTC, and other governments like the UK, China, and Ukraine also hold large amounts. Tesla, which has not bought or sold BTC since 2022, could look to sell holdings to fund new ventures, adding to the supply overhang. A high volume-to-market depth ratio suggests that volume far surpasses current available liquidity, often indicating wash trading. During the August market crash, this ratio peaked on all exchanges, but it was higher on those that experienced more market pressure. Binance dominates the market with $19 billion in daily volume, yet Bybit only averages $4 billion, and Coinbase reaches $2.8 billion. Will the continuous redistribution of funds to creditors create new liquidity gaps?

Exchange Rankings and Performance

Kaiko’s Q2 2025 benchmark places Coinbase in the top position and Kraken in second place. Kraken achieved its strongest quarterly performance in over two years, while Bitstamp by Robinhood also ranks in the top three. Bitstamp by Robinhood earned a business score of 89, a security score of 94.1, and a technology score of 88.5, providing more precision than the free liquidity scores on CoinGecko or the mindshare metrics from Messari. In Indonesia, Bitrue (Futures) shows a 24h volume of $3.76 billion and 24h open interest of $3.64 billion. KuCoin Futures shows $3.18 billion in 24h open interest, while Arcus (Futures) shows $410 million in 24h volume with $225 million in open interest. Binance volume reaches $19 billion daily, which is four times the $4 billion volume seen on Bybit. Coinbase volume remains lower at $2.8 billion daily. Kaiko’s price is too expensive for early-stage teams that only require simple candlestick endpoints.
