Risks of Worldcoin WLD supply deceleration and regulatory hurdles

Worldcoin faces a $2.6 billion supply overhang as 6.5 billion tokens remain to be unlocked. Despite a 43% reduction in daily emissions to 2.9 million tokens, regulatory friction from data protection authorities and a disconnect between user growth and token utility persist.

Risks of Worldcoin WLD supply deceleration and regulatory hurdles

The mathematics of the July 24 emission cut

The July 24, 2026, reduction in Worldcoin’s aggregate daily WLD unlock rate dropped emissions by 43%, moving from 5.1 million to 2.9 million tokens per day. At the current price of $0.41, this shift removes $0.9 million of potential new supply from the market every 24 hours. Before the change, the 5.1 million daily tokens amounted to $2.1 million in new supply, whereas the new 2.9 million rate equals only $1.2 million. While the scheduled reduction in daily emissions amounts to less than $0.9 million in potential sell pressure, this amount is less than 1% of the $190 million in trading volume that the WLD token typically sees every 24 hours. I see this change as a scheduled deceleration rather than a price catalyst. The programmatic change specifically targets the community grant tokens with a 50% cut, bringing that flow to 1.6 million tokens per day, while the 32% cut for team and investor allocations reduces their daily amount to 1.3 million tokens. Because grant recipients often sell immediately upon receipt, this asymmetry focuses the relief on the supply most prone to hitting the market quickly. This adjustment does little to combat the fact that WLD trades 96% below its March 2024 peak of $11.80.

Demand remains disconnected from user growth

The 30 million World App users and 14 million verified humans do not provide a price floor for WLD. Even though World expanded Orb verification to the United States in May 2026 and integrated with firms like Zoom, Tinder, DocuSign, and Okta in April 2026, most users simply use the identity protocol without purchasing the token. You should recognize that identity verification does not require WLD ownership. I view the 14 million verified humans as a solid foundation that still lacks a direct link to token utility. By April 2026, roughly 18 million people had verified at an Orb, and the World App supported hundreds of millions of transactions. This disconnect mirrors the challenge facing other AI tokens like Fetch.ai’s FET, where real usage exists but fails to translate into sustained demand. The project’s expansion into the largest AI market in the United States should have helped, but the mismatch between headcount and token holders persists. The growth to 30 million users demonstrates reach, but the economic link remains unproven.

Metric Value
Current WLD Price $0.41
Total Maximum Supply 10 billion
Circulating Supply 3.53 billion
Remaining Unlocked Supply ~6.5 billion
Remaining USD Value ~$2.6 billion
Daily Trading Volume ~$190 million

The $2.6 billion overhang and regulatory friction

The $2.6 billion overhang is the primary risk for long-term holders. Of the fixed 10 billion WLD maximum supply, about 3.53 billion tokens are currently in circulation. This creates a gap between the $1.44 billion market capitalization and the $4.08 billion fully diluted valuation. The remaining 6.5 billion tokens, valued at approximately $2.6 billion at current prices, are scheduled to unlock over the coming years. If the remaining 6.5 billion tokens released at the old pace of 5.1 million tokens a day would have taken three and a half years, the new 2.9 million pace stretches that window toward six years. The July 24 cut changes the speed of the drip, but it does not change the total amount of tokens the market must eventually absorb. Regulation also creates a barrier to growth. The Spain data protection authority forced a pause on World-related activity in early 2026 due to biometric concerns. Every jurisdiction that restricts Orb sign-ups narrows the funnel that must drive the demand a maturing token needs. Can the network expand enough to absorb this massive supply overhang?
