Solana infrastructure scales while Ethereum captures institutional flows
Solana achieves high throughput via the Firedancer validator client while Ethereum maintains institutional dominance through BlackRock's BUIDL fund, which holds $473 million in tokenized US Treasuries.
Solana delivers higher throughput and lower transaction costs than Ethereum. The Firedancer validator client, which went live on mainnet in December 2025, provides a second independent engine for the network. Firedancer validators finalized real blocks in production, and over 20 percent of Solana validators run Firedancer or the hybrid Frankendancer as of mid-2026. This client uses a modular design with separate processes called "tiles" to manage tasks. It reached a testing ceiling of over 1 million transactions per second. While real-world Solana throughput sits between 3,000 and 5,000 transactions per second, Firedancer provides the headroom to prevent the network from choking during high traffic.
Solana leads in tokenized equity volume with $465 million in on-chain stocks. On October 8, Securitize brought twelve tokenized US equities, including Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla, to the blockchain. These tokens use USDC for settlement and involve Jump Trading as a market maker. The network processes blocks in roughly 350 milliseconds, which supports 24-hour trading. However, Solana’s total value locked fell to $5.5 billion, which is half of its previous $11.5 billion level.
| Metric | Solana | Ethereum L1 |
|---|---|---|
| Real-world TPS | 3,000 – 5,000 | 15 – 30 |
| Average Transaction Cost | $0.00025 | $0.10 – $1.00 (L2) |
| Tokenized Stock Volume | $465 million | $12 million |
| Total Value Locked | $5.5 billion | $50 billion+ |
Ethereum retains institutional dominance through BUIDL
Ethereum maintains a massive lead in institutional adoption. BlackRock’s BUIDL fund, an institutional digital liquidity fund, holds approximately $473 million in tokenized US Treasuries on the Ethereum blockchain. This fund accounts for nearly 33 percent of the market share for this product. Ethereum also processes over $1 billion in total tokenized US Treasuries. The BUIDL fund uses Securitize for tokenization and BNY Mellon as a custodian. Because BlackRock’s BUIDL cleared SEC review on its rails, Ethereum holds a strong position for the first Nasdaq stock to move on-chain.
Ethereum holders do not capture fee revenue from the $2.5 billion in tokenized Treasuries flowing through the network. The BUIDL fund functions as a permissioned ERC-20 token for qualified institutional investors who meet a $5 million minimum investment requirement. While Ethereum provides the settlement infrastructure, the capital accrues to BlackRock and Securitize. Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade in May 2025 focused on validator efficiency and L2 scaling. The upgrade raised the maximum effective balance for validators to 2,048 ETH. This change helps institutional stakers manage thousands of validators more easily.
Divergent network utility and ETF pressures
Solana and Ethereum move toward different use cases. Solana targets high-frequency payments and consumer apps. The Alpenglow upgrade, which began feature activation on mainnet in late September, targets 150 millisecond finality by replacing Tower BFT with the Votor protocol. This change moves validator votes off-chain, which frees up three-quarters of the block space previously used for on-chain voting.
Ethereum targets high-value settlement through its modular architecture. Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum and Base handle execution while Ethereum provides security. The Glamsterdam upgrade, scheduled for Q4 2026, aims to triple the gas limit per block to 200 million through Block-Level Access Lists. This upgrade follows the Pectra update and targets higher L1 capacity.
Solana faces volatility in its ETF market. The SEC delayed decisions on Bitwise and 21Shares Solana ETFs, but it later dropped all delay notices for several altcoin ETFs. Grayscale’s GSOL fund added $20.2 million of SOL over 20 days, while VanEck’s VSOL fund sold $700,000 on October 12. Total Solana ETF outflows reached $24.81 million for the week of October 5 to 9. In the stablecoin sector, Solana saw $3.5 billion in new USDC issuance in a seven-day period leading to October 12. This represents the largest weekly issuance of USDC on the blockchain this year. Does the continuous growth in USDC holdings compensate for the lack of fresh money in US spot ETFs?
