Decentraland MANA vs the metaverse dead ends
Decentraland reported 847,000 monthly unique visitors in late 2025 following its expansion to the Epic Games Store. While Samsung purchased digital land, Yuga Labs faces gameplay struggles with Otherside despite a $450 million investment.
Decentraland expansion and token use
Decentraland MANA trades at $0.086, a price that sits 98% below the November 2021 all-time high. The platform reported 847,000 monthly unique visitors in late 2025, which was a 23% increase from mid-2025. This growth follows the April 2026 launch on the Epic Games Store and Android. The 23.7 million MANA treasury transfer funded various ecosystem grants and development tools throughout 2024 and 2025, which helped the platform expand to the Epic Games Store and Android in April 2026 for new users to enjoy. Samsung bought real estate in this world in January. MANA acts as the native currency for the 90,601 fixed parcels of virtual real estate. Users spend MANA to buy LAND, wearables, and avatars, and the protocol burns these tokens to reduce the 2.2 billion maximum supply. The circulating supply sits between 1.9 and 2.0 billion MANA, while the annual inflation rate stays at 2.25%. Exchange reserves of MANA dropped 48% from 606 million to 312 million tokens, suggesting significant accumulation. In January 2026, the platform hosted 312 community events with an average attendance of 127 unique visitors each. I see the platform growing despite the bearish market. The current market cap for Decentraland sits near $1 billion, a figure that some speculators say does not align with the few thousand daily users. The DAO controls the treasury, development grants, and platform governance through community votes.
The Otherside and Sandbox reality
Otherside remains a struggle for Yuga Labs. The company raised $450 million in March 2022 to build its metaverse games, but players call the product virtually unplayable. One user quit after only 15 minutes of gameplay because of bugs and aim lag. Greg Solano admitted that scale testing revealed bugs that internal tests with a few hundred players missed. I find the disparity between the $450 million investment and the buggy reality hard to ignore. The 2,907 concurrent players record for a shooter does not hide the fact that many users find the experience frustrating. The 2nd Trip event in March 2023 brought 7,214 concurrent users, yet Yuga Labs also gave up intellectual property rights to two of its games this year. To play, users need an NFT from one of 13 sets, including Bored Ape Yacht Club, Otherdeed, Grailed Moonbirds, Meebits, and HV-MTL. Sandbox maintains 166,464 land parcels and uses SAND for its economy. The platform is governed by a DAO, which means no board of directors can kill the project with a quarterly earnings call, and MANA holders vote on every significant decision. You already know that metaverse hype often outpaces actual utility.
Hardware and market growth
Hardware adoption could change the trajectory for MANA. Apple may launch an augmented reality headset, which could shift speculative sentiment toward Decentraland. Samsung also purchased digital land in January. JPMorgan Chase predicts the metaverse will become a $1 trillion industry. This belief relies on businesses realizing they must be present in the LAND to compete for customers who socialize and shop there. The 90,601 parcels exist on the Ethereum blockchain, and transaction fees require ETH. Users must pay a 28% tax on capital gains from the sale of virtual real estate or apparel. Decentraland’s community reaches over 300,000 monthly users, and brands like Coca-Cola and Adidas participate in the space. The 90,601 plots are divided into individual plots, estates, districts, and plazas. This growth is driven by users who explore Genesis City and user-created spaces. The metaverse market was expected to reach $800 billion by 2024. Will the integration of Samsung’s XR headset finally bridge the gap between crypto enthusiasts and mainstream gamers?
