Horizon creators and hardware shifts face economic pressures

Meta's transition of Horizon Worlds to a mobile-only experience creates revenue gaps for creators despite a $50 million Creator Fund. Meanwhile, the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S and rising FHA mortgage delinquency rates in states like Mississippi signal broader market instability.

Horizon creators and hardware shifts face economic pressures

The Horizon Worlds transition

Meta restructured its ecosystem in 2026 by making Horizon Worlds a mobile-only experience. The platform disappeared from the Quest Store on March 31, 2026, and users lost access to VR worlds like Kaiju and Bobber Bay after June 15, 2026. This transition forces developers to focus on mobile optimization tools and TypeScript support for complex logic. On that same March deadline, Meta removed digital clothing and Meta Credits from the Meta Horizon+ subscription. While the company provides a $50 million Creator Fund for mobile and MR worlds, the removal of Horizon-specific perks from the subscription creates a sudden revenue gap for many makers. This expansion to mobile aims to reach 3.3 billion active users across Horizon and Facebook. To encourage building, Meta launched a $1 million mobile-focused competition on March 11. Creators can also sell digital items in 18 additional countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan. The company previously held an inaugural competition in 2024 that awarded $500,000 in prizes to 20 worlds. Desktop editor users in the US can use generative AI tools for sound effects and ambient audio generation while they map traditional 2D and 3D app development workflows to build new worlds on a PC.

Hardware price adjustments

The hardware market faces significant shifts as Meta introduces the Quest 3S to fill the gap left by the unavailable Quest 2. The 128GB version of the Meta Quest 3 faces discontinuation by mid-November, creating a market where the new Quest 3S models at $300 and $400 become the primary options for budget-conscious consumers. This new model uses the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor to ensure solid performance despite potential downgrades in RAM or display quality. You know the hardware cycle, so watch for price drops on the remaining Meta Quest 3 stock. The Quest 3S price points align with the leaked Amazon advertisement. The Quest 2 was previously $399.99 or $499.99 for the 128GB or 256GB models, depending on the capacity. Meta also cut the price of the Quest Pro by $500. This price reduction for the Quest Pro took effect in Canada and the United States on March 15. The Quest 2 price also fell to $429.99. The Quest 3S may have a bulkier design than the existing Quest 3, which offers a sleeker look. Does the cheaper price of the Quest 3S effectively cannibalize sales of the higher-end Quest 3?

Model Price
Meta Quest 3S (128GB) $300
Meta Quest 3S (256GB) $400
Meta Quest 2 $430
Meta Quest Pro $1,000

Mortgage performance shows growing instability in certain sectors. The national delinquency rate stood at 3.27% in July 2025. FHA-backed mortgages account for over half of serious delinquencies, which include loans at least 90 days late. Foreclosure filings climbed to 207,000 units, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year. Mississippi and Louisiana lead the country with default rates of 7.55%. Earlier data from April 2020 showed a spike where the delinquency rate jumped to 6.1% from 3.6% in March. In that period, early-stage delinquent loans rose to 4.2%. Atlantic City and Miami saw year-over-year delinquency rates increase by 6.7 and 5.4 percentage points, respectively. While serious delinquencies remained at their lowest level since June 2000, the rise in early-stage delinquencies interrupted 27 straight months of declines. New foreclosure starts have risen for eight months in a row. Calls for legal advice specifically pertaining to foreclosures also saw a sharp spike earlier this year. FHA-backed mortgages account for much of the 2025 distress rate.
