The development and economic history of the Star Atlas metaverse
Star Atlas transitioned from a 2021 Solana IDO to a complex ecosystem featuring the Zink chain and Unreal Engine 5 Showroom. Despite a 40% capital loss during the FTX collapse, the project generated over $220 million in revenue through digital asset and NFT sales.
Michael Wagner, the Co-Founder and CEO of ATMTA, Inc., leads development. He and his team conceived the concept in 2020, a foundational year for the project. The project became a signature Solana application during 2021. In the year 2620, the game takes place in the Galia galaxy. Humanity governs the MUD Territory, while alien races govern the ONI Region and sentient androids control the Ustur Sector. In September 2021, the POLIS governance token reached an all-time high of $19.73 and a market capitalization of $89 million. The FTX collapse in November 2022 caused a 40% single-day drop in SOL and trapped $15 million of ATMTA capital. Even with these setbacks, the company generated over $220 million in revenue through digital asset and NFT sales. The gameplay includes space exploration, mining, refining, and combat. Players manage resources like food, fuel, ammunition, and tool kits. The team has since grown from four people in January 2021 to 200 members. You know the basics of Solana gaming, so focus on the specific economic shifts.
Zink and the Unreal Engine 5 modules
The project follows an iterative release strategy. Users access the ecosystem through three distinct products: the Holosim simulation, the SAGE Labs economy simulator, and the Unreal Engine 5 Showroom. The team launched Zink, a custom Solana Virtual Machine Layer 1, in December 2025 to handle high transaction throughput. This dedicated chain uses zero-knowledge proofs for zProfiles to enable unified identity. Early ATLAS and POLIS token lockers received 10% of the ZINK token supply to incentivize migration. The Showroom remains the foundation for the Unreal Engine 5 experience. In July 2025, ATMTA deployed voting-escrow smart contracts for POLIS so holders could lock tokens in exchange for proportional voting power, where 1,000 POLIS locked for four years generates 4,000 voting power. The program for the Major League Hacking Web3 Fellowship involves four emerging developers who pair with the Star Atlas team for 12 weeks to expand the Foundation SDK. The development team manages the MUD, ONI, and Ustur factions. The Showroom includes a Dogfight Arena and racing tracks. All 49 available ships in the Showroom Pre-Season Release 2.1 are flyable and players use jetpacks. This module also allows for ship configuration and the deployment of ships on missions. Players in the Showroom use advanced Photoli terminals to summon ships to landing pads. The module also includes racing tracks with the Volant Station map. In the Pre-Alpha, players control Asha, an instructor of the Academy, to fly ships and participate in dogfighting. The Zink chain uses a centralized configuration with a roadmap toward decentralization by mid-2027. The current Chapter 4 development cycle runs from September through November 2026.

Economic contraction and governance mechanics
The economic reality remains harsh. Star Atlas tokens fell approximately 80% during the six-month period ending March 5, 2026, causing them to underperform both SOL and the broader gaming token index. This decline saw SOL drop 60% while the gaming index fell 50%. Resource prices collapsed between 70% and 85% in USDC terms from September 2025 levels. During the first quarter of 2026, the full-period GDP reached $502,334 in USDC and 1.84 billion ATLAS. The ecosystem recorded 8,109 active citizen accounts during this period. The total ecosystem NFT and SFT asset holdings reached approximately $27 million across 129,413 tracked accounts. The total supply of POLIS is 360 million tokens, which results in a market capitalization of $3.8 million. The current POLIS price is $0.01. The total GDP from September 15, 2025, through March 5, 2026, reached $1,839,185 in USDC and 4.22 billion ATLAS. During this period, daily ATLAS emission rates averaged between 9 and 11 million tokens. Will the community maintain interest as resource prices continue to fall?
