The future of Illuvium’s open-world RPG
Illuvium faces significant economic pressure as the ILV token trades 99.8 percent below its $1,900 peak. The project aims to stabilize its dual-token economy and player base through the upcoming December release of its Overworld expansion.
Illuvium developers cut salaries this year to hold out longer as the ILV token trades at $3.90. This price is 99.8 percent below the $1,900 peak from November 2021. The broader gaming industry faces intense instability, as 5,000 crypto jobs vanished in 2026. Moonshot Games laid off employees after its July 2025 launch failed to remain sustainable, and Full Circle Studio faces similar cuts following low player counts for EA’s Skate. The Illuvium project faces a difficult path as it attempts to launch its open-world title, Overworld, this December while the ILV token price is 99.8 percent below its $1,900 all-time high. Although the company raised $74 million through a virtual land sale in June, the team manages a market where 90 percent of Web3 games failed according to Caladan. Funding for new studios collapsed by 93 percent. Major players like Coinbase and Kraken cut hundreds of roles, with Coinbase removing 700 people and Kraken eliminating 150 positions. Illuvium also raised $20 million through private funding and NFT sales. The industry saw 41 closures in the first half of 2026 alone.
Development and economic structures
The Illuvium ecosystem is a dual-token model to manage its economy across interconnected titles. Players use ETH for purchases while the sILV2 token is the in-game currency. The Illuvium DAO, managed by ILV holders, controls the marketplace and decides on protocol changes. Kieran and Aaron Warwick lead a global team of 40 people to build these systems on the Ethereum network. The team uses Amazon Web Services serverless architecture to scale the game for millions of players. This infrastructure allows users from different regions to play together without account restrictions.
| Asset | Function | Type |

Players capture creatures called Illuvials which belong to five classes: Fighter, Guardian, Empath, Rogue, and Psion. These creatures have affinities like Air, Nature, Fire, Water, or Earth. There are 21 affinities and 21 classes in total. Fusing two Illuvials creates Ascended hybrid classes. In the Overworld, hunters gather resources to upgrade equipment or trade on the IlluviDex. To capture an Illuvial, players must weaken it in battle and use a shard. The quality of the shard must match the power level of the creature. The IlluviDex is the native marketplace for trading NFTs like Illuvials and equipment for ETH. The IlluviDex charges a 5% fee, with 3% going to stakers and 2% to IMX. The total supply of ILV and sILV2 is 10 million. Players obtain sILV2 by burning ILV. The project has invited 12,000 people into its beta version and maintains 1.9 million people on its waiting list. Market sustainability and competition
Illuvium’s survival depends on whether the December release attracts players who want a traditional gaming experience. The project struggles with a player base that is small compared to the massive hype of 2021. The decision to cut salaries shows the development team works under extreme financial pressure. Many competitors face even harder declines, such as Axie Infinity, which saw daily users drop from 2.7 million at its peak to roughly 5,500 today. In the Illuvium Arena, players face challenges from smurfs who make it easy to earn rewards. The project seeks to avoid the design flaws of games like Palworld, which lacks native Web3 integration. Can a game built on a model where players seek profit instead of fun maintain a stable population? The project aims to build a cohesive experience where players leverage progress across different games. This goal requires the successful management of the shared economy between the Overworld, the Arena, and Illuvium Zero. The scale of the Overworld expansion is the project’s best chance to prove the model works.
