The history of The Sandbox virtual land sales
The Sandbox virtual land market reached a capitalization of over $1 billion by late 2024 following various neighborhood launches. Despite SAND token volatility, the platform expanded into Saudi Arabia through a partnership with Sandsoft to target the Middle East gaming market.
Land sales and brand neighborhoods
The Sandbox started its first LAND sale in 2019. In late 2022, the platform grew when the California Dreamin’ neighborhood launched on November 24 and included brands like FaZe Clan and Playboy. A second wave for the Galleria neighborhood followed on December 1, 2022. The Voxel Madness theme arrived in early 2023. These sales included standard and premium plots, and some large estates appeared on OpenSea near Snoop Dogg’s SnoopVerse. To ensure fairness, the platform used a raffle system and a KYC process to validate entrants with at least 1,011 SAND on the Polygon network. The brand partners for these neighborhoods included Tony Hawk, Paris Hilton, Cipriani, L’Officiel, and Cut the Rope. In August, a fourth LAND presale sold out in less than 24 hours, and 75% of the available plots sold in the first 30 minutes. This sale included 4,536 LANDs, 1,134 of which were Premium LANDs, along with 4,546 Premium ASSETS and 1,134 Legendary Dragons. A total of 367 users bought these plots, which generated 650 ETH, or more than $250,000. By the end of 2024, 80% of all LAND plots on the map had sold, which pushed the map’s market capitalization over $1 billion.
Market volatility and token utility
The SAND token price hit an all-time high of $8.40 three years before the end of 2024, yet the price sat at $0.77 by late 2024, which meant a 79% increase for the year despite a 91% drop from that peak. In 2022, the token closed at $0.38 after starting the year at $5.97. Secondary sales on OpenSea produced 138,461 ETH, totaling $481 million in volume for LAND NFTs. The floor price for a plot currently sits at 0.13 ETH, or $452. In October 2024, the alpha season 4 release drew 276,000 unique users, and 30,000 of those people bought $5 alpha passes to increase their rewards. In March 2024, the platform announced that users had published over 1,000 UGC experiences. The SAND token also integrated support for BNB, Base, and Polygon, and the developer introduced the Sandbox DAO in May 2024 to give holders influence over assets and rewards. Players use this utility token to purchase land or in-game items. The platform also works on a mobile release for the existing PC version. The current price of $0.77 is a massive drop from the $8.40 all-time high. I find the $8.40 peak versus the $0.77 price to be the most telling sign of volatility.
Expansion into Saudi Arabia
The Sandbox expanded into Saudi Arabia through a partnership with Sandsoft, a mobile-first game developer based in Riyadh. This collaboration aims to grow the creator market and user base in the Middle East and North Africa. Sandsoft brings expertise from developers who worked on franchises like FIFA, Candy Crush, and Need for Speed. The platform’s expansion into the region targets local talent such as industry figures Yahsir Qureshi and Ahmed Sharif. The Sandbox currently holds over 1 million registered wallets. This expansion into the Middle East aligns with the Saudi Vision 2030 goal of diversifying the economy. The regional market for the metaverse is expected to see growth, with Saudi Arabia holding a 45% regional share. Additionally, 5G subscriptions in the region reached 3.1 billion by the first quarter of 2026. The platform works with over 400 partners such as Adidas, Warner Music Group, and Snoop Dogg. The growing mobile-first gaming populations in the region help support this expansion. The project also builds connections with local public and private industry actors to explore new gamified experiences. Does the platform’s growth in the region depend entirely on these localized partnerships?
