Yuga Labs’ Otherside introduces Legends of the Mara
Yuga Labs' Otherside launches Legends of the Mara, a 2D strategy experience using ApeCoin, as Improbable's M2 network seeks to maintain its $150 million investment despite legal disputes with Unity. This development occurs as Somnium Space VR reports a decline to approximately 620 players.
Yuga Labs’ Otherside introduces Legends of the Mara, a 2D strategy experience for Voyagers that utilizes ApeCoin. Users claim a Vessel NFT for every Otherdeed they own, requiring at least one Otherdeed and a Koda to play. Each claimed Vessel arrives as a unique ERC-721 token via a new smart contract sent to the Otherdeed-holding wallet. These Vessels develop into Mara and eventually into more capable Kodamara through specific environmental catalysts. The three distinct species – Farmer, Hunter, and Enchanter – emerge from the Vessels following an incubation period. While Kodas excel at farming, enchantment, and hunting, they can only perform one function at a time. This rollout happens while Improbable navigates a difficult legal situation because Unity suspended its SpatialOS developer license. Improbable maintains that the lack of clarity in Unity’s terms of service places developers in a precarious position, especially as a Unity account manager informed a customer that Improbable was no longer permitted to use the service. Epic Games and Improbable announced a $25 million fund to assist developers affected by these changes. The M2 network, which Improbable claims can connect to the metaverse, recently raised $150 million and holds a $1 billion valuation. Improbable’s tech uses distributed supercomputing to allow thousands of simultaneous players in a single world. Improbable also partnered with Google to allow developers to use SpatialOS and Google Cloud without charge until commercial release. The experience remains driven by the celestial Odiac.
Decentraland’s DAO Council works to modernize governance by transitioning to a five-seat multisig configuration and implementing Snapshot. This transition follows a period of tension where a former treasurer struggled for a year to hand over wallet control because two members refused to sign the transaction. The Council also implements a geographic diversity policy to prevent overrepresentation from a single region. Decentraland still operates on legacy Aragon v1 contracts, though the Council plans to draft an updated configuration proposal soon. Meanwhile, Somnium Space VR shows a shrinking user base, with estimated players at ~620 in October 2026, marking a 1.8% decline from the ~617 players recorded in September. The Repopulation reports even lower engagement, with only ~201 players in October 2026. In comparison, Somnium Space players reached ~7.2k in August 2026. You should notice how these numbers contrast with the massive infrastructure push from Yuga Labs. ApeCoin faces its own challenges because 90% of its 1 billion total supply unlocked by March 2026. In April 2026, ApeCoin traded near $0.22 after a surge triggered by the announcement of new CEO Michael Figge, even though a whale opened a 5x leveraged long position on 9.19 million tokens. Apeing reports 200.6 million tokens burned to manage supply.
The M2 network migration carries more weight for the metaverse than the land buyback proposals or the stalling VR hardware sales. Improbable’s ability to maintain its SpatialOS technology through its partnership with Google will determine if its $150 million investment survives the legal dispute with Unity. While ApeCoin attempts to build utility through the Legends of the Mara, the platform must still address the fact that ApeChain’s total value locked dropped 80% from its peak. The convergence of high-level funding for M2 and the specialized 2D gaming layer in Otherside creates a more active ecosystem than the struggling standalone VR headsets currently found in the market. The 3D VR glasses market is transitioning from a niche segment into a scalable enterprise technology category, yet hardware remains a hurdle due to bulky form factors. Does the reliance on ApeCoin for the Legends of the Mara provide enough stability to offset the volatility seen in previous crypto-driven gaming expansions?
