Coinbase MiCA compliance and OKX infrastructure expansion

Coinbase maintains authorization as a crypto-asset service provider under the MiCA regulation while OKX manages a US$25 billion valuation and the X Layer blockchain platform. These firms navigate diverging regulatory paths across the European Union, Dubai, and Hong Kong.

Coinbase MiCA compliance and OKX infrastructure expansion

Coinbase maintains authorization as a crypto-asset service provider under the European Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. This status requires the company to follow strict rules harmonized at the European Union level to provide a safer and more reliable experience for its users. As the largest publicly traded crypto company since April 2021, Coinbase releases financial statements every quarter to ensure transparency. The company protects customer assets by not using or lending them without permission. For eligible customers in the European Economic Area, Coinbase Financial Services Europe Ltd. provides futures trading via CySEC License 374/19, though this involves high risk to capital. Coinbase also allows users to earn rewards of up to 13% APY on certain holdings through staking. These staking rates remain indicative and vary over time. Coinbase maintains its standing in the European market by strictly adhering to the harmonized rules of the MiCA regulation, which provides a safer and more reliable experience for its millions of users across the entire European Union.

OKX infrastructure and expansion

OKX holds a US$25 billion valuation after receiving investment from the NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange in March 2026. An additional funding round in October 2026 included investments from Ripple Labs, Circle Internet Group, SC Ventures, StanChart, and QRT. The exchange manages the X Layer blockchain platform, which uses OKB as the sole native gas token following an economic model overhaul in 2025. This platform provides a different structural reality compared to centralized exchanges. OKX also pursues integration with traditional markets through its joint venture, OKXICE, which filed with the SEC in October 2026 to launch a platform for tokenized US stock trading. The company manages its global operations through several distinct regulatory paths. It holds a CySEC license for futures trading in the EEA. Following its incorporation in 2023, the firm also maintains a presence in France. The exchange continues to expand its footprint in the United States from its San Jose headquarters. These moves demonstrate a commitment to localized compliance. OKX, founded in 2013 by Star Xu, also faces historical hurdles. In 2018, a trader bought bitcoin futures with a $416 million notional value on margin. The exchange forced the liquidation of that position at a large loss and injected 2,500 Bitcoins, worth about $18 million, into an insurance fund. Traders who had made an unrealized profit during the previous week still had to pay a clawback rate of 17 percent.

Market realities and diverging models

The regulatory landscape favors entities that integrate directly with existing frameworks like MiCA. You should evaluate how these different compliance paths affect your choice of exchange. OKX faces distinct historical challenges, such as the 2020 suspension of withdrawals during a police investigation. The exchange also stopped serving customers in Mainland China in October 2021 because of new regulations. This contrasts with the steady regulatory alignment seen in the European sector. Will the SEC approval for tokenized stocks arrive this year? OKX maintains a provisional virtual asset license in Dubai from July 2022 and applied for a license in Hong Kong in March 2023. The company, which rebranded from OKEx in 2022, continues to navigate these international markets. The difference in how these firms handle regional laws remains evident. While Coinbase leans into EU-wide harmonization, OKX manages a mix of local licenses in Dubai and Hong Kong.
