Lightning Network merchant adoption and liquidity realities

Lightning Network fees remain low at 0.0029% despite routing success rates for 0.05 BTC payments falling to 13.61% in 2022. While Shopify expands B2B tools, channel counts have dropped to 47,000 as participants consolidate liquidity into larger channels.

Shopify B2B expansion and merchant costs

Shopify expanded B2B tools to Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans on April 2, 2026. These tools include company profiles for wholesale buyers, three custom catalogs, and volume discounts. The expansion of B2B tools to Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans allows merchants to manage wholesale and direct-to-consumer sales on a single platform without needing to integrate different, expensive third-party software systems for their growing business operations. Shopify Plus users pay a base fee of $2,300 per month for a three-year term or $2,500 for a one-year term. For stores exceeding $1 million in monthly sales, the cost shifts to a 0.25% revenue share of gross merchandise value. Shopify Plus also provides a 0.20% surcharge on third-party gateways compared to the 0.5% rate on Advanced plans. Merchants transitioned to Shopify Functions after the old Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. Shopify Flow automates tasks like flagging risky orders or routing fulfillment by region. Launchpad handles timed events like flash sales or product drops. Shopify Plus infrastructure handles traffic surges with 99.99% uptime and processes more than 10,000 checkouts per minute. While merchants face hurdles like price volatility and regulatory uncertainty, Lightning Network fees remain low at 0.0029%, which equals 3,000 satoshis for $28,800 in value.

Metric Value/Rate
Shopify Plus Base Fee $2,300 – $2,500/mo
Lightning Median Fee 3,000 satoshis
Hydro Median Fee 0.65%
Rails LP Minimum 1 BTC

Liquidity consolidation and routing failures

The Lightning Network channel count fell from 87,000 in mid-2022 to 47,000. Total capacity reached 5,700 BTC in December 2025. Average channel capacity increased 384% since 2020 as participants consolidated into larger channels. River reported $1.17 billion in volume during November 2025. In January 2026, Secure Digital Markets routed a $1 million transfer to an exchange as a proof-of-concept. The total value locked in the Lightning Network sits at $140 million, which looks small against Bitcoin’s $700 billion market capitalization. Node growth increased by only 6% since June 2022. Major players like Binance integrated Lightning in July 2023, and Coinbase works on its own integration. Inbound liquidity allows a node to receive payments, while outbound liquidity allows a node to send payments. A node going offline stops it from processing payments through its connected channels, which potentially causes a double spending attack if the downtime lasts long enough. However, the success rate for routing a 0.05 BTC payment fell from 37.29% in 2018 to 13.61% in 2022. I find this decline in routing reliability for larger amounts completely unacceptable for enterprise-grade commerce. You already know the basics of liquidity, but how will providers manage the growing concentration of capital in fewer, larger channels?

Amboss automation and yield services

Amboss provides automation through Hydro to help businesses acquire inbound liquidity. Hydro purchases channel leases from the Magma marketplace with a median fee of 0.65%. This tool supports circular economies like the one in Costa Rica’s "Bitcoin Jungle" by automating liquidity needs. The setup cost for these payments fell from 3.5% to as low as 0.003% for subsequent transactions. Amboss uses AI technology to strengthen the network with more dependable transactions and larger payment volumes. Amboss also runs Rails, a self-custodial Bitcoin yield service, through partnerships with CoinCorner and Flux. Rails LP requires a minimum commitment of 1 BTC for one year. Liquidity subscriptions for businesses start with fees from 0.5%. CoinCorner uses Rails for its exchange platform and daily payment services in the Isle of Man. Jesse Shrader, the Amboss CEO, says Rails enables businesses to strengthen the network while earning on their Bitcoin. David Boylan, the CFO of CoinCorner, says Rails provides a structured approach to engaging with the Lightning economy.
