MicroStrategy's Bitcoin treasury and the cost of corporate accumulation

MicroStrategy scales its holdings through massive issuance

MicroStrategy holds 766,970 BTC, a massive position that defines its entire existence. In Q1 2026, the company acquired between 88,316 and 94,470 BTC at an average price of $75,644 per coin. This aggressive buying led to a $14.46 billion unrealized loss in the Q1 2026 earnings report. The firm generates 99% of its funding from securities issuances rather than operating cash flow. In the first two weeks of April, the company added 17,585 BTC in gains, worth $1.3 billion. This happened as Bitcoin crossed $77,000 on April 16, 2026, after tensions between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz subsided. Michael Saylor aims to reach 1 million Bitcoin by late 2026. MicroStrategy’s strategy relies on issuing stock when the share price trades above 4.0x net asset value, while it acts opportunistically between 2.5x and 4.0x to manage its massive Bitcoin treasury. The company carries $8.25 billion in debt and $10.1 billion in preferred shares that carry an 11.5% yield. The company’s BTC Yield hit 3.7% year-to-date in Q1 2026, and that figure translated to a gain of 24,675 coins worth $1.7 billion. MicroStrategy also bought 430 BTC at an average price of $119,666 in August 2025.

Metaplanet and Semler navigate different treasury realities

Metaplanet holds 40,177 BTC as of March 31, 2026, after purchasing 5,075 BTC in the first quarter. The company reported a $619 million net loss for fiscal 2025 because unrealized valuation declines on Bitcoin holdings pressured the balance sheet. To fund future acquisitions, Metaplanet issued 8 billion yen, worth about $50 million, in zero-interest ordinary bonds. EVO Fund fully subscribed to this issuance, which marks the company’s 20th bond issuance. The firm also acquired 775 BTC at an average price of ¥17.72 million ($119,853) per coin. While Metaplanet continues to direct capital toward Bitcoin purchases through its 20th bond issuance, its stock price fell 27% across six months because investors fear the company’s debt-funded strategy.

Semler Scientific provides the QuantaFlo vascular testing system, but its Bitcoin investment strategy dictates its recent results. The company reported an EPS of $5.04 on August 4, 2025, which beat the anticipated $0.27 loss. This gain stems from $83.8 million in unrealized gains from Bitcoin holdings. However, Semler’s core healthcare revenue fell to $8.2 million, which missed the $8.4 million estimate. The company’s Bitcoin holdings reached $586.2 million by July 31, 2025, and yielded 31.3% through that date. Semler shows a current ratio of 0.52 and faces liquidity challenges. The company reports a negative price-to-earnings ratio of -11.36 and a price-to-sales ratio of 16.66. The enterprise value to sales ratio is 18.42, and the debt-to-equity ratio is 0.59.

Divergent paths for corporate holders

Metaplanet 40,177 BTC $619 million fiscal 2025 loss

The companies now own a significant portion of the market; MicroStrategy and Metaplanet jointly own over 648,000 BTC, which is approximately 3.1% of the total circulating supply. Look, you already know that volatility kills. The median stock performance among Bitcoin treasury copycats showed a 43% decline in the first half of 2025. MicroStrategy’s success depends on capital market access and its first-mover advantage. Will the debt load collapse under a prolonged Bitcoin bear market?
