ETF competition and institutional shifts

The Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) is the best entry point for low-fee Bitcoin exposure because of its 14 basis point expense ratio. This fund undercuts Grayscale Investments Inc.’s BTC by 1 basis point and BlackRock Inc.’s IBIT by 11 basis points. MSBT reached $100 million in assets during its first week. Allyson Wallace, the global head of ETFs at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, said the firm wants to show commitment through this lower fee. The fund targets high-net-worth investors, but the firm also plans campaigns for self-directed investors. Morgan Stanley has about 16,000 advisors. In 2024, Morgan Stanley began to allow advisors to offer third-party Bitcoin ETFs, such as IBIT and Fidelity Investments’ FBTC. Coinbase Custody Trust Co. and Bank of New York Mellon provide custody for MSBT. The launch of the MSBT follows a regulatory shift where the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency allowed national banks to hold crypto assets on their balance sheets to facilitate blockchain-related activities. Morgan Stanley used roughly 200 employees across risk, compliance, legal, marketing, and global financial-crimes teams to prepare. Goldman Sachs also filed for the Goldman Sachs Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, which holds spot Bitcoin ETFs and sells call options on those funds to provide investors with steady income.

Client demand and portfolio allocations

UBS increased its IBIT holdings by 230% in the first half of 2026 to meet client demand. While Bitcoin prices fell 47% from the October peak of $126,080 to the current level of $67,441, major institutions like Fidelity and Bank of America continue to recommend modest allocations to capture long-term upside. You should know that these institutions treat Bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier rather than a purely speculative asset. The 230% increase in IBIT holdings by UBS reflects a trend where institutional investors gain exposure through regulated products. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, which were approved in the U.S. in early 2024, provide a compliant vehicle for traditional financial institutions to offer access to the market without the complexities of direct custody or regulatory uncertainty.

Institution Recommended Bitcoin Allocation
Fidelity 2% to 5%
Bank of America 1% to 4%
Morgan Stanley Up to 4%
BlackRock 1% to 2%
WisdomTree Up to 1%
JPMorgan Chase Up to 1%

Custody services and price targets

Deutsche Bank plans to launch cryptocurrency custody for institutional and corporate clients by the end of this year. This service will support Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins such as USDC. The launch addresses the need for secure storage of private keys for digital assets. Sabih Behzad, the head of digital assets and currencies transformation at Deutsche Bank, noted that intraday repo remains a promising use case for tokenized assets. This comes after the International Organization of Securities Commissions identified interoperability challenges and post-trade fragmentation as barriers in a November 2025 report. In Europe, Clearstream launched a tokenised securities platform in November 2025 that provides clients a choice between digital and tokenised issuance. In the U.S., the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation is developing a tokenization service for liquid assets, including the Russell 1000 and ETFs that track major indices and US Treasury bills, which is expected to go live in October 2026. Bitcoin traded at $75,650 on September 16, but the asset faces heavy selling pressure. JPMorgan analysts suggest Bitcoin could reach $266,000 to compete with gold, though they call this target unrealistic for the current year. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink projected Bitcoin could reach $700,000 because of currency debasement. Will the current price slump prevent the $80,000 target from materializing before the year ends?
