Data availability competition in the modular blockchain landscape

Celestia faces intense competition from EigenLayer's security marketplace and NEAR's Nightshade sharding as the modular ecosystem evolves. While Celestia's Eden chain processes millions of transactions, TIA price volatility and NEAR's low calldata costs present significant market challenges.

Data availability competition in the modular blockchain landscape

Modular architecture and the Eden pivot

Celestia launched Eden, an EVM chain for AI agents, using TIA as the native gas token. Eden utilizes the Evolve technology stack and maintains a 100-millisecond block time and a 50 million block gas limit. This execution environment posts transaction data back to the Celestia mainnet for permanent storage. Light nodes verify this data through "Data Availability Sampling" to avoid downloading full blocks. Celestia faces a massive price collapse as TIA trades at $0.63, which is a 97% drop from its early 2024 peak of $21. The network fee revenue over 24 hours reached only $108. Eden raised the contract bytecode size limit to 128KB to accommodate complex agent contracts. This environment uses the x402 protocol to settle machine-native micropayments for AI agents. Eden has processed 2.59 million cumulative transactions since its July dark test. Eden includes 0x76 atomic batch execution and gas sponsorship via Paymaster to reduce capital friction. The Eden block production speed is faster than most EVM chains. The first experiment involves a closed beta test for Botfun where agents issue their own tokens. AI agent payments on the Base chain grew to over 138 million transactions in Q3 2026. Can Celestia maintain its modular dominance while its token value sits near zero?

EigenLayer and the security marketplace

EigenLayer secured tens of billions of dollars in restaked assets by April 2026. The protocol allows Ethereum validators to secure Actively Validated Services like EigenDA or cross-chain bridges. These services pay restakers in fees or token rewards to avoid building validator sets from scratch, which removes the need for native token incentive programs. EigenLayer activated slashing on its mainnet on April 17, 2025, to enforce operator accountability among its validator sets. If an operator violates the rules of an Actively Validated Service, the protocol penalizes the allocated stake. You should watch operator selection closely because a weak operator might suffer downtime or misconfigure software, which directly threatens the restaked capital. The Kelp DAO suffered a $280-293 million exploit in April 2026 via a LayerZero bridge vulnerability, which demonstrates the real risks that liquid restaking tokens face when they depend on complex, decentralized cross-chain infrastructure. Restaking yields often reach 8-12%, while standard Ethereum staking yields provide only 3-4%. EigenLayer supports 12 liquid staking tokens, including Lido’s stETH and Rocket Pool’s rETH. The AVS economy includes decentralized sequencers, oracle networks, and AI inference verification systems that rely on Ethereum’s security. Users utilize liquid restaking tokens like weETH from ether.fi or rsETH from Kelp to participate. The protocol allows users to choose operators based on performance history and fee structure. The protocol uses Unique Stake to isolate slashable stake so a single chunk of capital is not exposed to every AVS. The AVS economy is a marketplace where services rent security from the Ethereum validator set.

Scaling competition from NEAR and Avail

NEAR Protocol uses Nightshade sharding to process transactions in parallel. NEAR DA provides a cheaper alternative for call data than the Ethereum mainnet. In December 2023, 231 kB of calldata cost $0.0016 on NEAR, while the same amount cost $0.046 on Celestia. NEAR processes thousands of transactions per second with latencies of around 1.3 seconds. The protocol directs 30% of all transaction fees to the developers who create the smart contracts. NEAR has a 5% annual inflation rate and 84% of its supply is in circulation. Daily active addresses for the network increased 1,250% year-over-year to reach nearly one million. The KAIKAINOW social platform drove significant activity on the chain, and the NEAR ecosystem includes applications like Sweat, which has a cumulative user base exceeding 140 million across both Web2 and Web3 versions, and Playember. NEAR provides human-readable names like user.near to simplify usage. The network’s circulating market cap reached $3.7 billion in late 2023. Avail researchers continue to study data availability and the modular stack through community discussions. These discussions include comparative studies of Avail DA, Celestia, EigenDA, and Ethereum. Avail provides different technical approaches to the data availability problem. The NEAR implementation of fee delegation improves the experience for users and developers.
