Hyperliquid commands derivatives market despite centralization risks

Hyperliquid handles $216.9 billion in 30-day perpetual volume, but HYPE token validator centralization and spot AMM impermanent loss exploits pose significant threats to its market dominance.

Hyperliquid commands derivatives market despite centralization risks

The HYPE buyback flywheel and validator concerns

Hyperliquid handles $216.9 billion in decentralized perpetual exchange volume over the last 30 days, which is 34.6% of the total market. I see the $18 billion open interest reported on September 23 as the reason traders stick to this L1. The protocol routes 97% of revenue to the Assistance Fund to buy HYPE, and this mechanism has already removed 44.7 million tokens from the supply. I believe Hyperliquid is the best venue for traders who want deep liquidity and automated buybacks. However, I find the HYPE token validator centralization a serious threat to this dominance. If a few validators control too much power, the security of the whole network fails. The HYPE price is $80.92, and the protocol has already absorbed $1.28 billion in revenue via buybacks. The Assistance Fund has accumulated 44 million HYPE tokens at an average cost of $24.76 per token. Monthly fees are $75.42 million, but the quarterly gross revenue is below the $356.66 million recorded in the third quarter of 2025. Even though the market share is down from 44% in March, the exchange added $985 billion in volume in about four and a half months.

Spot market vulnerabilities and builder dominance

The HIP-3 framework allows third-party builders to deploy markets, and tradeXYZ handles 95.1% of that volume. These markets are 30% of all trading. I observe that the spot AMM impermanent loss exploit exposed vulnerabilities in how assets settle on the chain, and you should watch how liquidity moves between the L1 and HyperEVM.

Metric Hyperliquid Value
Perp DEX Volume (30-day) $216.9 Billion
Open Interest (Sept 23) $18 Billion
HYPE Buyback Percentage 97% of fees
Total HYPE Supply 1 Billion

The HYPE price is stable, but the expansion into commodities and stocks through HIP-3 creates new risks. While the platform handles billions in volume, the recent exploit in the spot market shows that scaling too fast can break technical foundations. The open interest in real-world-asset perpetuals is $3.6 billion, which is a large portion of the $11 billion total open interest. This growth includes over $250 million tied to SpaceX ahead of its expected public listing. In the second quarter, tradeXYZ alone handled $202.36 billion. Real-world asset perpetual volume is $365 billion in the third quarter. Builders must stake 500,000 HYPE for six months to deploy markets. The platform is 50x leverage on major assets.

Comparing dYdX v4 validator concentration

dYdX v4 processes $1.57 trillion in cumulative lifetime trading as of April 2026. The dYdX community holds over 230 million DYDX in its treasury. I worry about the dYdX v4 Cosmos appchain validator set collusion reality. Because the top ten validators in the active set currently hold two-thirds of the voting power and the top three hold one-third, a small group of operators can effectively control the entire protocol through coordinated voting or censorship. A malicious actor needs $912 million in staked DYDX to reach 2/3 power and exploit user deposits. Does dYdX have enough economic security to prevent this collusion? dYdX has 33,000 active stakers as of April 2026. The staking rewards for DYDX are 20% APR. The total DYDX stake is $456 million at a $4 price. The chain has 60 validators using CometBFT for consensus. More than $150 million USDC arrived in dYdX v4 in the past week. The community treasury and treasury vester hold 230 million DYDX, which is $920 million at the current price.
