Uniswap v4 hooks: gas, security, and market realities

Uniswap v4 reduces pool creation gas costs by 99% through its Singleton architecture and flash accounting. While the core codebase remains secure after a $15.5 million bug bounty, researchers identified vulnerabilities in 36% of analyzed hook projects.

Uniswap v4 hooks: gas, security, and market realities

Gas Efficiency and Singleton Architecture

The Uniswap v4 PoolManager replaces individual contract deployments with a single state update in the PoolManager contract, which reduces pool creation gas costs by 99% compared to Uniswap v3. Instead of multiple token transfers between contracts, flash accounting uses EIP-1153 transient storage to record balance changes. This method costs 100 gas per read versus the 20,000 gas required for a cold storage write. A three-hop trade requires only two token transfers: one token in and one token out. While developers believe hooks always add significant overhead, the PoolManager checks address bits to avoid unnecessary external calls for unused hooks. This architecture supports ten callbacks organized into five pairs. Developers choose which callbacks to implement through the getHookPermissions function. These permission flags encode into the hook contract address using CREATE2. Some hooks implement TWAMM to break large orders into small sub-orders, while others use dynamic fees to adjust swap costs based on on-chain volatility. KYC-gated pools also use the beforeSwap callback to verify traders against allowlists via ERC-3643.

Feature Uniswap v3 Uniswap v4
Pool creation gas 4.5M gas Tens of thousands of gas
Multi-hop routing Token transfers Internal balance accounting

Hook Security and Malicious Code

Security remains a primary concern because hooks function as arbitrary smart contracts with access to pool state. In September 2025, 0x researchers classified 54.2% of 84,000 deployed hooks as malicious and reported that some hooks quoted one price in simulation but settled at a different price on-chain. BlockSec found vulnerabilities in 36% of 22 analyzed hook projects and identified flawed access control as the most common issue. The Cork Protocol incident demonstrated how missing msg.sender checks allow attackers to call hook functions directly and mint unbacked derivative tokens. You should verify the hook contract before any swap. How can a user trust a code base when 36% of projects show flaws? Developers face friction with address mining because they must find a CREATE2 salt that produces the correct leading bytes. Debugging remains difficult when error propagation through the PoolManager provides no context for reverts. The Uniswap v4 codebase underwent nine independent audits, a $2.35 million security competition with over 500 participants, and a $15.5 million bug bounty program, which resulted in zero critical bugs found in the core contracts. The community of active hook developers currently contains between 200 and 300 builders. Developers must use reentrancy guards on all state-modifying callbacks to prevent potential exploits.

Market Competition and Asset Pricing

Curve Finance maintains a lead in stablecoin swaps because its StableSwap invariant delivers 10 to 100 times less slippage than Uniswap v3 or v4 for near-peg assets. For example, a $1 million USDC to USDT swap experiences 0.3% to 0.5% slippage on Uniswap v4, while Curve keeps it below 0.01%. The June 2025 Resupply exploit cost users $9.3 million when users lent crvUSD into Curve vaults, which triggered legal disputes in Singapore against Haowi Wong and Wang Lei. PancakeSwap and UniswapX continue to compete for the cross-chain swap market, where UniswapX holds only 20% to 30% of the volume. The Uniswap Growth Program secured $4.8 million in external incentives from ecosystems like Boba, Celo, and Optimism. This program deployed $950,000 in incentives to drive a $10 million increase in TVL across ZkSync, Saga, and Optimism. The program reached 4 million impressions in March and produced 13 episodes of the Ungovernable series which reached 1.3 million cumulative views. Uniswap Labs manages a 20 million UNI annual budget. The Uniswap Foundation also proposed a one-time burn of 100 million UNI tokens from the treasury to compensate holders.
