Yield divergence and the reality of staking risks
Pendle's total value locked grew 51% to over $11 billion as the market reacts to Arthur Hayes's token liquidations. Meanwhile, StakeWise manages osETH vault migrations with a 90% LTV buffer, and Swell faces exchange rate discrepancies following a suspension of swETH deposits.
Pendle yield and Hayes
I see the market adjusting to Pendle’s upcoming November 26 maturity for PT-sUSDS. Pendle separates yield-bearing assets into Standardized Yield tokens before splitting them into Principal Tokens and Yield Tokens. Principal Tokens function as zero-coupon bonds. They redeem 1:1 for the accounting asset at maturity. Yield Token holders receive all streaming yield and rewards until expiry, though the value decays toward zero as maturity approaches. Pendle deployed this system across 12 networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Base, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic, HyperEVM, Berachain, Monad, Katana, and Ink. This protocol aims to bring over $400 trillion of traditional finance interest-rate derivative strategies into DeFi. Pendle’s total value locked grew by 51% in the last 30 days to over $11 billion. This growth follows the protocol’s ability to handle a $1.5 billion maturity event without disruption. The protocol maintains a price-to-fees ratio of around 10x. Arthur Hayes, who holds 1.69 million PENDLE tokens, released 1.55 million tokens worth $9.41 million to realize profits. He argues that lower interest rates increase the appeal of DeFi yields and could reignite the Ethereum bull market. However, ZachXBT accused Hayes of using followers as exit liquidity after he liquidated HYPE, ZEC, and NEAR positions within a two-week window of his public promotion. His exit from HYPE, which he previously projected would reach $150, caused a 26% decline in the asset’s spot value. The market responds to these shifts by seeking the most stable yield options.
The StakeWise migration plan
StakeWise allocates 375,000 SWISE and 18.4 osETH from its treasury to move approximately 15,000 ETH to its vaults. This program involves 468 validators and provides yield reimbursement of 0.001 ETH per 1 ETH staked. The DAO also provides a maximum of 0.08 ETH for gas per validator and a 25 SWISE bonus per 1 ETH migrated. I view the decision to split the Genesis Vault from the DAO to promote it independently as a way to reduce conflicts of interest between the protocol and its builders. The amount of ETH deposited in Vaults by people landing on the Marketplace page remains low in comparison to direct flows into third-party Vaults and the osETH token via the Stake page.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| osETH Maximum LTV | 90% |
| GenesisVault Fee | 5% |
| Yield Reimbursement | 0.001 ETH per 1 ETH |
| Gas Reimbursement | 0.08 ETH per validator |
| SWISE Bonus | 25 SWISE per 1 ETH |
The maximum 90% Loan-to-Value ratio, enforced in each vault, ensures a minimum 3.2 ETH buffer per validator to absorb potential staking penalties without impacting osETH holders. If a validator is slashed, the protocol withstands a loss of approximately 1 ETH, but the penalty increases if slashed validators reach 33% of the total. Users in StakeWise V3 can choose between Smoothing Pools, which distribute block rewards proportionally to ensure stability, or Own Escrow vaults, which preserve the randomness of block creation. Each vault administrator sets commissions between 0% and 100%. For the GenesisVault, the 5% reward fee accrues to a StakeWise DAO account. Professionals like Deutsche Telekom manage a portion of the staking share, while others like Finoa and StakeWise Labs run validators. You should monitor your position closely if you choose to mint osETH. A position is deemed unhealthy if the value of minted osETH exceeds 92% of the staked ETH.
Swell token depegging
Swell suspended all swETH and rswETH deposits and withdrawals on October 24. The exchange rates for these tokens hit 1.203 ETH and 1.138 ETH, which exceeds previous levels by 6% and 5%. Trading prices on decentralized exchanges dropped to 1.089 WETH and 1.029 WETH. An on-chain analyst suspected a compromise of management keys for the tokens that could affect approximately 2,500 ETH, although no formal execution of a malicious upgrade contract was detected by investigators. Swell maintains that the ETH in the deposit and withdrawal contracts did not leave the protocol. The reported exchange rate discrepancy significantly differs from the 1.089 WETH and 1.029 WETH trading prices seen on decentralized exchanges. I think the Swell situation exposes risks from automated exchange rates. Will the team find the cause of the exchange rate anomaly before users demand full withdrawals?
