Consensys control and Ethereum Foundation influence

Consensys maintains vertical integration through MetaMask, Infura, and the Linea rollup, while Ethereum Foundation researchers propose reducing ETH issuance to 0.4% to limit staking dominance. This tension highlights risks regarding sequencer centralization and governance power.

Consensys control and Ethereum Foundation influence

Consensys sued the SEC to prevent regulation of the Ethereum blockchain. MetaMask, the largest self-custody wallet, plans to launch $mUSD later this year through a partnership with Stripe’s Bridge and M0. This stablecoin is integrated across the MetaMask ecosystem and the Linea network; it permits users to perform on-ramps, swaps, and cross-chain bridging. Consensys is the company that controls the MetaMask wallet, the Infura RPC provider, and the Linea rollup. I view this vertical integration as a significant risk because it forces the entire user journey through one company’s ecosystem. A MetaMask popup suggests Linea by default, and an Infura key works against Linea endpoints with no new signup, which forces users into a closed loop where Consensys controls the wallet, the RPC, and the rollup. You should manage your risk by using different RPC providers and wallets. MetaMask also expands its features with the launch of Perpetual Futures and MetaMask Rewards. The rewards program includes $30MM in LINEA token allocations and a free year of the MetaMask Metal Card. This expansion follows the growth of the wallet, which remains a dominant player, as MetaMask integrates with Hyperliquid to provide in-wallet perpetual trading and with Polymarket to enable prediction markets. Consensys also conducted a survey of 18,000 individuals across 18 countries, which showed that 93% of respondents possess awareness of cryptocurrencies, while 83% rank data privacy as a top issue.

The Linea sequencer is centralized under Consensys control. A June 2024 pause following a $6.8 million Velocore exploit proved that a single operator can halt the chain. While the Linea Consortium joined the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust in May 2026 and renamed the stack to Lineth, the sequencer and prover are operator-run services. The current roadmap targets Stage 1 in Q4 2025 and Stage 2 in 2026, but realistic production-grade decentralization for major rollups is 12 to 18 months away. Linea has processed over 230 million transactions since its August 2023 launch and currently hosts over 420 partners. The network also uses the Maru consensus client to replace the Clique mechanism and uses the Credible Layer for smart contract security. The network also incorporates a Yield Boost mechanism to stake ETH held in the canonical Linea Bridge contract and distribute rewards to the L2 ecosystem. The Lineth stack, which includes an L2 Execution Layer built on Besu, provides a vendor-neutral implementation of Layer 2 technology.

Ethereum Foundation researchers proposed reducing ETH issuance to 0.4% in February. This plan aims to reduce incentives for new stakers and limit the dominance of liquid staking platforms like Lido. Ansgar Dietrichs and Caspar Schwarz-Schilling wrote that current issuance dilutes holders beyond the necessary security levels to prevent further dilution for ETH investors. Community members such as Paul Dylan-Enis argued that EF-associated researchers wield outsized power over the decentralized network. This pushback followed the news that the team behind the Ethereum Foundation’s Institutional Privacy Task Force formed EthSystems, an independent for-profit company. The foundation removed its transparency measures and warrant canary in February. Does the foundation intend to maintain its non-profit status while its members launch commercial ventures? Mike Neuder expanded on the proposal and explained that real yield from staking might drop to zero. This necessitates exogenous rewards for profitability. Tim Beiko argued that core developers and researchers treat proposals as WIP ideas rather than official roadmaps. Jon Charbonneau argued that these tweaks try to solve an unsolvable problem of fundamental tradeoffs in PoS. The researchers believe that reducing ETH issuance will harden ether as a form of money by tapering its inflation rate. They estimated that the proposal would reduce ETH staking yields by nearly a third.
