SEC decision and the Ethereum ETF price spike

Ethereum prices spiked 14% to $1,641 following SEC approval for options trading on several ETH ETFs. While these tools offer new hedging capabilities, single-stock covered-call ETFs face significant capital erosion risks, with some funds losing 37.2% annually.

SEC decision and the Ethereum ETF price spike

The SEC approval of options trading for BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust, Bitwise Ethereum ETF, Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust, and Ethereum Mini Trust provides a new hedging tool for investors. This regulatory move follows a Nasdaq ISE proposal submitted on July 22, 2024. I view the sudden 14% spike in Ethereum price to $1,641 as a direct response to the SEC approval and the recent 90-day Trump tariff pause. However, the SEC postponed its decision on the BlackRock ETHA proposal until November 10 because the regulator needs more time to evaluate the potential impact that these options could have on market stability. This delay follows a similar 90-day postponement for NYSE American LLC regarding Bitwise and Grayscale options. The SEC’s decision on Ethereum options follows a similar move last October when it approved options trading on 11 Bitcoin ETFs for NYSE American, Nasdaq, and Cboe Exchange, which was intended to improve market liquidity. The SEC is also currently deciding whether to classify the digital asset as a security, adding to the regulatory complexity.

Yield of single-stock covered-call ETFs

Investors targeting high yields via single-stock covered-call ETFs face significant risks of capital erosion. The 20 largest single-stock covered-call ETFs gathered over $18 billion in net inflows from November 2022 through September 9, 2026. Despite an aggregate annual return of 26.6%, these funds held only $5.8 billion in total net assets as of that same date. I calculate that investors had only $392 million in pre-fee income and gains to show for their $18 billion in contributions. These funds distributed $13.1 billion in total. This amount swallowed more than half of the $392 million in pre-fee income. Many investors entered positions after the funds posted a distribution yield of at least 50% and earned a positive return, with $12.9 billion of net inflows occurring in those specific periods.

The YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF warns of these risks. It gathered $4.1 billion in inflows from February 2024 to early May 2025, but it incurred more than $1.7 billion in net losses through September 9, 2026. Even with a 22.4% annual total return, the average dollar in that fund lost 37.2% annually because the fund’s distributions often exceeded its actual income. In 14 of the 20 largest covered-call ETFs, the dollar-weighted return fell shy of the total return, with the average shortfall reaching 10 percentage points. You should recognize that the stocks these ETFs reference performed much better, gaining more than twice as much as the covered-call funds over the same period, especially as these funds remain tax-inefficient due to the high frequency of realized gains.

Concentration and liquidity concerns

The Ethereum ETF market faces heavy outflows and concentration risks. Grayscale’s spot Ether ETF recorded $80.6 million in single-day withdrawals, which was the largest exit since the products launched earlier this year. This exodus contributed to the $79 million in net outflows seen on a single Monday. ETH ETF holders witnessed their funds drop over 50% YTD. Centralized staking risks also remain a concern because the top three staking pools control over half the total stake, while Lido dominates liquid staking with 85% of the market. While some products like the -2x Ether ETF saw 247% returns this year, these products use 2x leverage short positioning. Do these short products actually protect against the massive outflows seen in Grayscale’s funds? Coinbase expects the expansion of crypto utility to affect innovation across the entire industry. The decision follows months of political debate regarding the asset class.
