BERA price volatility and the Proof-of-Liquidity reality

BERA prices dropped 49% to $8.00 following a peak of $14.83 during the Berachain mainnet launch. The network utilizes a Proof-of-Liquidity model where BGT governance tokens direct emissions to protocols, contrasting with traditional Proof-of-Stake systems.

BERA price volatility and the Proof-of-Liquidity reality

BERA prices fell 49% to $8.00 after hitting a $14.83 peak during the Berachain mainnet launch. The community airdrop, which reached a $1.17 billion value at its peak, allocates 15.75% of the 79 million BERA supply to users. While 11.15% of the supply, or 55.75 million tokens, went to users, the remaining 4.6% of the airdrop allocation remains for teams and applications that earned a share via the Request for Broposal program. Because Berachain raised more than $100 million to bring its novel consensus mechanism to fruition, it set aside 65.5 million BERA tokens for future community incentives. The network operates with EVM-identical code, allowing users to add support through MetaMask or Rabby wallets to access tokens. BERA trading lives on Binance, OKX, and Coinbase. Most airdropped BERA sits in eligible users’ wallets, though some require a bridge or an exchange claim. Smokey the Bera, a pseudonymous co-founder, stated the team will work in the trenches to help teams get set up to win on Berachain. Boyco participants receive rewards within 30 to 90 days based on their market participation. I find the 49% price drop following the surge quite extreme.

PoL mechanics and tokenomics

The Proof-of-Liquidity model integrates liquidity provision into the network security process. This mechanism requires liquidity provision as the primary means to participate in consensus, unlike traditional Proof-of-Stake systems where validators secure the network by staking tokens. BGT, the non-transferable governance token, dictates the portion of BGT emissions routed to native DeFi protocols through staking. The network creates BERA as a gas token by burning an equal amount of BGT. This dual token system increases the overall capital efficiency of the system.

LPs receive a pro rata share of rewards and participate in governance. A bribing market allows prospective pools to pay BGT holders to direct emissions to specific pools. You should understand that BGT holders control the flow of rewards to liquidity providers. Traditional Proof-of-Stake systems lock up capital without contributing to on-chain liquidity, whereas PoL ensures liquidity provision remains integral to security. This approach connects incentives between validators, protocols, and users. Does the BGT burning mechanism sustain long-term BERA demand?

Lessons from centralized lending failures

The shift toward liquidity-based security contrasts with the failures of centralized lenders like Vauld. Vauld suspended all withdrawals, deposits, and trading activities following a massive crypto market downturn. The firm processed more than $197.7 million in customer withdrawals starting June 12, 2022. These financial challenges followed the collapse of the Terra project and the default of Three Arrows Capital on their loans. This market bloodbath forced many centralized platforms, such as Voyager, Celsius, and BlockFi, into bankruptcy risks. Three Arrows Capital filed for a Chapter 15 bankruptcy in the United States. The Vauld team hired Kroll Pte Limited alongside legal experts Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP to formulate measures to overcome these challenges. Vauld also holds talks with potential investors to provide more funds to the ecosystem. The firm seeks to file applications for the suspension of existing lawsuits against potential investors to help the proposed restructuring exercise. The Vauld situation demonstrates the inherent risks of centralized lending during a market downturn. At the time of the market decline, Bitcoin traded around $19,721.
