Wintermute and the shifting crypto order
Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy offered a $16 million reward to recover assets following a $160 million exploit. Meanwhile, NEIRO memecoin faces bearish pressure from whale exits, and FTX reaches an $885 million settlement with the IRS.
Gaevoy manages the aftermath of a $160 million exploit
Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy offered a cyberthief $16 million, which is 10% of a $160 million theft, to return stolen digital assets. The exploit targeted the London-based market maker’s decentralized finance operations. A vulnerability in the Profanity wallet addressing tool allowed the attacker to recover a private encryption key to drain the wallet. This bug, which 1inch Network disclosed on September 15, led to the loss. Gaevoy attributed the incident to human error rather than automated processes. While the firm halted centralized finance and over-the-counter trading for risk management, these operations fully resumed Tuesday afternoon. The firm remains solvent and manages more than $5 billion in daily trades. Gaevoy also criticized the current market focus on price appreciation. He argues the industry abandoned cypherpunk ideals for a "number go up" mentality. He notes the $120 billion in total value locked in Ethereum remains stuck within the ecosystem. He also claims stablecoins reinforce US dollar dominance rather than creating a parallel financial system. Gaevoy says he has multiple leads on the responsible party but the window to resolve this simply is closing fast. This situation mirrors a 2021 case where a hacker returned $610 million stolen from Poly Network. Gaevoy notes that while Bitcoin was designed as a decentralized alternative to government-controlled money, current developments often contradict that mission.
NEIRO faces pressure from exiting whales
NEIRO experienced a 14% price drop in 24 hours as trading volume hit $685 million. The memecoin trades at $0.0020 after hitting all-time highs last month. A decline in large holders suggests the asset loses attractiveness to major players. Whales holding between 1 million and 100 million tokens reduced their holdings by 5% over seven days. This group of large holders consists of 1,252 addresses. Moving average convergence/divergence indicator readings show the MACD line crossed below its signal line and moves toward the zero line. The movement of the MACD line toward the zero line suggests that the current bearish momentum could potentially drag the price down significantly if demand does not return to the market immediately. If this persists, the price could fall 55% to $0.00091. You might think these shifts reflect typical volatility, but the volume surge signals investors locking in profits.
| Asset | Current Price | 24h Change | Potential Low |
|---|---|---|---|
| NEIRO | $0.0020 | -14% | $0.00091 |
| Wintermute Loss | $160,000,000 | N/A | N/A |
FTX settlements and the DEX landscape
FTX reached a settlement with the US Internal Revenue Service to pay $885 million. The reduction from the initial $24 billion claim to the current $885 million settlement happened after FTX argued that such a high amount would hinder the ongoing creditor settlement process for its millions of users. This follows an earlier $44 billion claim from the agency. Some claimants worry that calculating repayments using November 2022 prices will leave them short-changed. The exchange expects to repay all customers in full and has amassed up to $16.3 billion for distribution. FTX holds an $11 billion debt owed to approximately two million customers. Sam Bankman-Fried, who founded the exchange, was found guilty on seven counts of fraud, embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy. Prosecutors called him an ambitious businessman with the arrogance to think he could get away with fraud. He faces up to 110 years in prison. The exchange previously warned of a possible delay in its repayment process because of a proposed $24 billion tax bill by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. FTX also called the IRS tax claim "meritless". Meanwhile, the rebuilding of Drift Protocol as Velocity DEX faces competition from firms like Wintermute. Velocity targets major crypto markets with high leverage options and maintains fees near 0.02% to 0.035%. Drift lost between $285 million and $295 million in April 2026 through admin or social engineering paths. This loss destroyed trust in operational security. Will the market prioritize venues with higher transparency or those with cheaper fees?
