Scaling crypto derivatives

CME Group reported $3 trillion in notional volume across cryptocurrency futures and options in 2025. This momentum continues into 2026, as cryptocurrency derivatives average daily volume reached 407,200 contracts, a 46% increase from last year. In the first week of November, Bitcoin futures open interest across all crypto derivatives platforms hit $24.32 billion. CME Group captured $4.1 billion of this total, making up 16.84% of the aggregate open interest. Binance leads with 5.81 billion in open interest, making up 23.9% of all Bitcoin futures positions. Other significant players include FTX with $3.84 billion, Bybit with $3.63 billion, and Okex with $2.21 billion. Cryptocurrency derivatives average daily volume increased 139% in 2025, and January 2026 average daily volume reached 29.6 million contracts. Total revenue for the exchange reached $6.5 billion in 2025, with market data revenue reaching $803 million. You should monitor how these shifts in liquidity affect your own hedging plans.

The options shift

Institutional interest moved toward traditional finance vehicles last year. In September 2025, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) surpassed Deribit as the largest venue for bitcoin options. IBIT held nearly $38 billion in open interest, while Deribit’s open interest sat at $32 billion following the latest expiry. This shift occurred because the IBIT ETF holds more than $84 billion in assets. Traders now face a landscape where liquidity flows toward regulated products.

Expiration Date Call Open Interest Put Open Interest
March 27, 2026 $660 million $240 million
February 27, 2026 $230 million $260 million
June 26, 2026 $60 million $175 million
April 24, 2026 $8 million $75 million

The CME Group data shows heavy concentration in upcoming expirations. Call options for the March 27, 2026, contracts dominate at $660 million, while puts for the same date reach only $240 million. The April 24, 2026, expiry displays a different trend, with $75 million in puts and only $8 million in calls. In early January 2026, daily options volume started near $90 million before peaking at roughly $320 million on January 28, while open interest in Bitcoin options climbed to $1.75 billion by late January.

Volatility and dynamics

Market volatility remains high as Bitcoin consolidates near $60,000. ETH realized volatility spiked to 90 while BTC realized volatility hit 70. This divergence makes short gamma strategies hazardous. The Volatility Risk Premium turned deeply negative at -25, which means the market moved far more than options priced in. In the options market, demand for short-dated puts increased. BTC’s near-term skew settled around -10, whereas longer-dated skew remained near -4. ETH’s skew curve followed the same shape as BTC.

The market structure also changes with the expansion of Micro Bitcoin and Micro Ether futures. These products expand retail access while institutional interest grows. For context, Deribit held 97% of the ETH options market share and 90% of the BTC options market share. In November, Deribit saw 8.9 million ETH contracts and 778,000 BTC contracts. The total Bitcoin futures open interest across all crypto derivatives platforms reached $24.32 billion in the first week of November, with CME Group capturing $4.1 billion, making up 16.84% of the total market volume in that period. This volume remains small compared to the $31.06 billion in BTC spot trading volume seen in November 2022. Does the move to 24/7 trading on CME Globex provide enough liquidity to compete with perpetual swaps?
