Leadership shifts at Yuga Labs and Animoca Brands
Greg Solano has returned as CEO of Yuga Labs to implement an agile restructuring focused on Otherside development. Meanwhile, Animoca Brands manages a massive Web3 ecosystem with annual bookings reaching A$612 million in FY2022.
Yuga Labs shifts to an agile structure
Greg Solano, known as Garga, returned as CEO of Yuga Labs to focus on Bored Ape Yacht Club and Otherside. He replaced Daniel Alegre, who left after ten months in the role. Solano wants a smaller, more agile, and cryptonative team to replace the labyrinthine corporate processes that previously slowed development. This restructuring led to workforce cuts and the decision to spin out projects like HV-MTL and Legends of the Mara. Gamebuilder Faraway acquired these brands to manage them independently. Solano also noted that the company has enough cash to continue operations for years. I find the decision to shed these brands to be a logical step to focus on 3D Otherside development. The company previously raised $450 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz in 2022. This leadership change aims to move the company from "easy mode" to "hard mode" as it builds for the long term. The Bored Ape Yacht Club alone generated $2.9 billion in sales on the OpenSea marketplace. However, the APE token fell more than 95% from its all-time high. The April 2023 "Second Trip" playtest for Otherside showed progress in virtual world engagement, though some players found certain aspects repetitive and uninspiring.
Otherside development and legal risks
Otherside development relies on a process of constant iteration and community collaboration. The project provides a metaRPG platform where players own digital assets and interact in real-time. Chief Creative Officer Michael Figge and Chief Gaming Officer Spencer Tucker lead the effort to create an immersive experience. Solano uses a barbell approach to gaming by balancing high-risk ventures with mass-market games like Dookey Dash. The company claims to have more cash than any other NFT project. However, legal complications threaten the stability of the ecosystem. Scott+Scott is seeking plaintiffs for a class-action lawsuit alleging that Yuga Labs misrepresented the value of ApeCoin and Bored Ape NFTs to investors who purchased them between April and June. This litigation follows the collapse of centralized entities in 2022 and targets losses from that period. Yuga Labs also faces a lawsuit regarding trademark infringement. The SEC showed hesitation regarding the classification of NFTs as a form of security. Will the legal pressure slow down the rollout of new gaming experiences? You should notice that the Bored Ape Yacht Club floor price dipped below 11 Ether recently, which is a massive drop from its peak.
Animoca Brands manages a massive ecosystem
Animoca Brands maintains a massive presence in Web3 through a portfolio of over 400 projects. The company manages the Moca Network, which uses the Moca ID to provide digital identity infrastructure. Animoca also manages The Sandbox, an immersive metaverse platform.
