Physical collections and digital identities in Web3
Pudgy Penguins toys are available in 2,000 Walmart stores, allowing users to claim digital traits via birth certificates. This retail expansion follows $400 million in sales since the project launched in 2021.
Pudgy Penguins expands into retail
Pudgy Penguins physical toys occupy 2,000 Walmart stores in the United States. These 16 different types of Pudgy Toys cost between $2.99 and $11.97. Each toy comes with a birth certificate that lets users claim traits for a Forever Pudgy digital character in Pudgy World. This game uses the zkSync Era blockchain. Igloo Inc. is the parent company for Pudgy Penguins and the OverpassIP licensing platform. This structure uses Pudgy Penguins as the flagship brand to move users into the broader Igloo ecosystem. Luca Netz, the CEO of Pudgy Penguins, views the brand as an influencer. The expansion into Walmart follows previous successes on Amazon where the company sold 20,000 toys for over $500,000 in two days. This retail push uses the brand’s family-friendly appeal to reach consumers outside the crypto space. The project raised $9 million in seed funding and has $400 million in sales since its launch in 2021. Luca Netz, who previously worked at Ring Doorbell, bought the project for $2.5 million after the original founders emptied the treasury. The project previously faced a scandal where a Discord moderator claimed the founding team bribed him to keep quiet about the treasury being emptied. The game, Pudgy World, contains 12 unique towns called The Berg where players help the mascot Pengu find Polly.
Doodles and the RTFKT exit
Doodles holders redeem tokens for physical apparel through a partnership with Adidas and Pharrell Williams, because the garments contain NFC chips that link the physical items to digital assets through a single, highly simple tap within the expansive digital metaverse. This method differs from the RTFKT model. Nike sold RTFKT in December 2025 to focus on its core sports business and wholesale relationships. This sale occurred after the company halted RTFKT operations to address a market downturn and legal challenges from investors who alleged $5 million in losses. CloneX holders currently face image display issues on OpenSea and Blur. Technical lead Samuel Cardillo said the team will move CloneX to ArWeave for decentralized storage. This move helps preserve the visual representation of assets when external servers fail. You already know that the NFT market experienced a 67% downturn last year. The shift to physical athletic wear is the best move for Nike. The Doodles 2 Character Builder allows users to change apparel on avatars via the Flow blockchain. Only 300 packs of the Pharrell Pack exist for eligible holders. These packs include digital wearables from Adidas, Human Made, Billionaire Boys Club, and Ice Cream. If more than 300 people are eligible, a lottery decides the winners. Users must own an original Doodles NFT and use the Dooplicator NFT to generate digital apparel. Will the physical retail success of these brands eventually bridge the gap for the remaining Web3 users?
Connection technologies
NFC and QR codes provide two different ways to connect physical objects to digital profiles. NFC uses a short-range technology where a smartphone provides the energy needed for the exchange. A user taps the tag to open a web link. QR codes rely on a camera to scan a printed code. Users already understand how to scan QR codes, so this method works as a backup for NFC. This technology is the same used for smart dog tags that link a physical collar to a digital pet profile. The user taps the NFC chip to open a web address which then loads the profile. A finder scans the printed QR code with a smartphone camera to see the name or photograph. This is different from a GPS tracker. A smart tag helps the person who finds the dog identify them and contact the owner. A digital profile can hold information like the dog’s name, owner contact details, veterinarian information, and allergy notes.
