Pudgy Penguins shifts focus as Abstract shuts down

Abstract shuts down as Igloo redirects resources

Igloo Inc. will stop funding the Abstract Ethereum Layer 2 network to prioritize Pudgy Penguins and the PENGU token. Luca Netz, the Iglo CEO, said the company lost tens of millions of dollars while funding Abstract for the past 18 months. The network will shut down on December 15, 2026, after the company concluded its standalone business model was unsustainable. Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025, using a strategy to use Pudgy Penguins’ distribution to introduce consumers to onchain applications. The project previously raised more than $11 million in July 2024 through a funding round led by Founders Fund. While the network onboarded over 400,000 users through partnerships with brands like Disney and Red Bull Racing, it still struggled with stagnant growth, thin liquidity, a restricted decentralized finance ecosystem, and weak institutional adoption. The project also hosted more than 144 applications, but the decision to wind down rather than attempt to raise additional funding through a token sale shows the difficulty of sustaining an independent network. This decision follows the departure of two senior team members in August and weeks of speculation regarding developer wallet activity. Users must bridge all assets off the network before the December 15 deadline to avoid losing access to their funds.

Pudgy Toys enters Walmart stores

Pudgy Toys now occupy shelf space in 2,000 Walmart stores, where they sell alongside legacy consumer brands. Brittany Smith, the Vice President of Merchandising for Walmart U.S., said the products provide an engaging way for kids to play and fit the goal of providing Every Day Low prices. These toys provide access to Pudgy World, an open world digital social experience powered by the zkSync Era blockchain. Each toy includes a birth certificate that allows users to claim specific traits for a digital Forever Pudgy character by scanning a QR code. Since the toy designs incorporate traits from NFT collections including Meebits and DeGods, current NFT holders receive licensing royalties for every toy sold at Walmart. This integration connects physical retail to blockchain ownership through an approach of developing community driven and owned IP. The inclusion of Pudgy Toys in Walmart’s assortment signals a shift in IP development as the industry leverages a mix of community engagement and blockchain backed experiences. The team spent years developing the Pudgy brand and building the community through social media and blockchain to expand its reach across the globe. You should note how this retail expansion links physical collectibles directly to onchain IP.

The NFT industry faces significant financial and legal pressures. DraftKings agreed to a $10 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit from buyers of its now-shuttered NFT marketplace. Lead plaintiff Justin Dufoe filed the suit in March 2023, claiming he lost $14,000 by selling DraftKings NFTs at a loss and holding assets that lost value. The suit named co-founders Jason Robins and Matt Kalish, as well as finance boss Jason Park. The legal challenge argued that DraftKings offered the NFTs as unregistered securities under US law, a claim that Judge Denise Casper initially rejected when she said the assets could be securities. The class group estimated that realistic and supportable damages range from $18 million to $58 million, making the $10 million settlement only 26 percent of the midpoint of potentially recoverable damages. Dufoe also anticipates asking for a $50,000 award for his time and effort litigating the case, plus attorneys’ fees of up to one-third of the settlement fund plus litigation expenses. This settlement followed an all-day mediation and comes after a separate January agreement between DraftKings and the National Football League Players Association regarding player likenesses. Will the settlement prevent further legal action against other NFT creators? Abstract’s planned closure comes less than a week after the Ethereum Layer 2 Blast announced plans to wind down because its costs exceeded revenue.
