Marathon's Bitcoin Liquidation and the AI Infrastructure Pivot

Marathon’s debt retirement and the hashrate shift

Marathon Holdings liquidated 15,133 bitcoin for $1.1 billion over three weeks to retire $1 billion of convertible debt at a 9% discount. This transaction shifts the company away from pure-play Bitcoin mining and toward digital energy and AI/HPC infrastructure. I view this liquidation as a tactical move to secure financial flexibility for higher-margin energy contracts. While the company saw a 14% hashrate surge, the sale of such large holdings signals a shift in strategy. CEO Fred Thiel intends to expand the business into digital energy and AI/HPC infrastructure. The company holds 8,595 bitcoin total after its recent production increases, following a period of massive accumulation.

Riot’s AI expansion and the Corsicana reality

Riot Platforms pursues AI/HPC tenants at the Corsicana facility. An Altman Solon feasibility study identified 1.0 GW of secured power and 400 MW currently operational, but the 600 MW substation remains under construction. This construction delay complicates the company’s attempt to capture the AI market. I find the discrepancy between the $9.1 billion Anthropic deal at Rockdale and the ongoing construction at Corsicana telling. Riot Platforms secured a $9.1 billion, 20-year computing deal with Anthropic that provides 191 megawatts at its Rockdale, Texas campus and could reach a total of $16.1 billion in sales if the contract receives two five-year extensions. The Corsicana site includes 265 acres of owned land, with 65 acres developable and 35 acres vacant, and sits 60 miles from Dallas. This facility promises 270 direct jobs. Local residents and the Texas Coalition Against Blockchain Mining fight the project as they claim it threatens the power grid and water supplies. Do these local protests successfully stall the expansion?

Company 2026 YTD Performance Primary Strategy
Marathon Holdings +24% Digital energy/AI
Riot Platforms +66% AI/HPC data centers
CleanSpark -25.4% Sandersville lease

CleanSpark’s revenue decline and the Sandersville lease

CleanSpark faces a deteriorating mining business. Revenue fell 30.5% year over year to $138 million in fiscal Q3 2026. The company swung to a net loss of $239.8 million from a net income of $257.4 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA fell to negative $113 million from a positive $377.7 million. I call the $6.6 billion Sandersville lease a hollow promise because the revenue hasn’t started flowing. CleanSpark’s stock fell 25.4% in 2026. The company signed a 20-year, $6.6 billion triple-net lease at the Sandersville site with a high investment-grade tenant, but the company still struggles with its core mining revenue. You know the basics of the mining-to-AI transition, but CleanSpark’s inability to monetize its Sandersville lease highlights the difficulty of this shift.
