Aave GHO expansion and Lido governance shifts outperform Sky rebranding

Aave's GHO stablecoin expansion and Lido's new dual governance system via LIP-28 offer superior utility compared to the Sky protocol rebranding. Aave's community approved the GHO proposal with 99.96% in favor, setting a core borrow rate of 4.5%.

Aave GHO growth and Lido governance

I favor the expansion of Aave’s GHO stablecoin and Lido’s governance shift over the restrictive rebranding of the Sky protocol. Aave Companies proposed the introduction of the GHO decentralized, collateral-backed stablecoin, which is pegged to the USD. The Aave community approved the GHO proposal with 99.96% in favor, whereas 0.04% of voters chose to abstain. This approval included nearly 27,000 AAVE, with 25,000 AAVE coming from the developer aavechain.eth. Aave raised the core GHO borrow rate to 4.5% as redemption reserves stayed thin. While the specific collateral assets remain unfinalized, users can mint GHO against several crypto assets. 100% of interest payments on GHO borrows provide benefits for the AaveDAO. The starting interest rate and discount rate will be proposed in the next few weeks. Lido also introduced LIP-28, which grants stETH holders veto power through a dual governance system. This proposal follows the Ethereum Pectra upgrade, which introduced execution-layer reforms to improve scalability. Lido’s dual governance system uses a special timelock contract to separate DAO decisions from their execution. If discontented stakers deposit enough ETH into a designated escrow contract to cross the "first seal" at 1% of total Lido ETH staked, the timelock duration increases. If deposits cross the "second seal" threshold of 10% of Lido’s ETH TVL, they trigger a "rage quit" that blocks the execution of DAO decisions.

Lido oracle stability and Sky rebranding

Lido’s operational reliability stayed intact after a minor oracle error on July 26. A reporting oracle missed a single 32 ETH validator deposit, which caused the reported daily annualized percentage rate to drop to 2.04% instead of the expected 2.15%. The omission resulted from a "pending-deposit inclusion issue" where the oracle took a snapshot while the deposit was in transit. Lido deployed an updated oracle version on the same day to fix this reporting discrepancy. This update pushed the reported APR to 2.29% after the protocol incorporated the corrected balance. Lido’s built-in guardrails handle fluctuations up to 3.6% of Total Value Locked over a 36-day period. The fact that validator balances confirmed consistency throughout the incident shows the protocol remained healthy despite the reporting lag.

Protocol Feature Metric or Condition
GHO core borrow rate 4.5%
GHO community support 99.96% in favor
Lido first seal 1% of total ETH staked
Lido second seal 10% of total ETH TVL
MKR conversion rate 1 MKR = 24,000 SKY

The Sky protocol rebranding introduces USDS and SKY tokens but restricts access because Sky.money blocks anyone using a VPN. MakerDAO renamed its SubDAOs to Sky Stars, which makes the Spark protocol the first Sky Star. Most users can upgrade their legacy DAI to USDS, but MakerDAO keeps the old tokens as legacy assets. The upgrade of DAI and MKR tokens became available by September 18. MKR rose almost 4% before flatlining, currently trading at $2,120. LDO prices rose 6.5% in the last 24 hours. Sky founder Rune Christensen stated that "websites are not DeFi" in response to criticism regarding the VPN blocker.

Verdict on DeFi utility

I prioritize the Aave and Lido updates because they focus on governance and capital efficiency rather than rebranding hurdles. Aave’s GHO provides a native decentralized, collateral-backed stablecoin, while the Sky protocol faces criticism for its VPN blocker. This blocker prevents users from accessing the protocol, which many in the community believe contradicts the goal of decentralization. Aave’s GHO borrow rate currently sits at 4.5% as the market watches for further community support. The IMF director of monetary and capital markets, Tobias Adrian, expressed concerns that stablecoins not backed by cash or treasuries might lead to a crypto downfall, similar to how the Solana-based stablecoin Nirvana lost its peg after a flash loan attack. You should watch the Ethereum USDC conversion module, which remains nearly empty. Does the Sky protocol rebranding offer enough incentives to force the migration of all legacy DAI holders to USDS?
