dYdX and GMX diverge as revenue models and margin designs split
dYdX allocates 75% of protocol revenue to DYDX token repurchases while Synthetix moves to reacquire Kwenta via SIP-411. The comparison highlights dYdX v4 chain's isolated margin features against GMX and the evolving governance landscape of Arbitrum.
dYdX revenue and validator dynamics
dYdX allocates 75% of all protocol revenue toward open-market DYDX token repurchases under Proposal #313. This follows recent tokenomic refinements. CoinRoutes acts as the first governance-approved on-chain revenue partner on the dYdX Chain to provide algorithmic trading and smart order routing technology. This partnership brings incremental order flow to the protocol through the network of CoinRoutes. By integrating with the dYdX Chain, CoinRoutes provides access to deep liquidity for its network of hedge funds and active trading firms. Stakers on the dYdX Chain earn 100% of trading fees in USDC. A validator set of 60 secures the network via CometBFT. Most dYdX v4 validators have struggled with profitability because bandwidth in Tokyo remains expensive. Nevertheless, competition for validator positions increases as the minimum DYDX required to join the active set rises. Base tier fees include a 0.05% taker fee and a 0.02% maker fee. If the Treasury subDAO sees annual protocol revenue exceed $80M, it may consider a buy and stake program. The dYdX Chain has seen cumulative trading volume surpass $1.5Tn. Traders select either limit or market orders. The exchange is a leading venue for perpetuals.
Isolated margin and market expansion
Release 5.0 of the dYdX Trading v4 software introduced isolated markets to expand the available market universe beyond the original 20 markets. These markets use segregated collateral pools and individual insurance funds to manage specific risk properties. Traders can choose to trade any market as an isolated position or continue using cross-margin against all open positions, which allows for more granular control over individual trade risk. This ability to confine collateral to a specific position helps traders manage risk more intuitively. If you want to control specific exposure without affecting your entire account, isolated margin provides that option. The widget lists 20 markets. Users can select markets that are available on at least two centralized exchanges. Validators query prices directly from decentralized exchanges like Raydium or Uniswap v3 on Base. This functionality uses native subaccount logic to move collateral from a trader’s cross subaccount to other subaccounts with zero open positions. Once a trader closes all positions, the protocol moves the collateral back to subaccount 0. Traders must conduct research on oracle sources and spot liquidity when choosing an isolated market.

Synthetix acquisition and Arbitrum security
Synthetix plans to reacquire Kwenta to unify the brand and frontend under the Synthetix umbrella via SIP-411. This proposal sets a 1 KWENTA to 17 SNX exchange rate with a three-month lock-up and a nine-month linear vesting period. The Arbitrum DAO used its sequencer to blacklist four attacker-controlled wallet addresses within eighteen minutes of the KelpDAO exploit to prevent the movement of stolen funds to the Ethereum mainnet. This intervention proves that Layer 2 governance can restrict asset movement. However, the legal challenge against the DAO decision to freeze these funds creates uncertainty for users who prioritize absolute immutability. GMX relies on the safety provisions of Arbitrum and Avalanche. Synthetix hosts a $1 million trading competition for 100 participants ahead of its mainnet launch. The winner receives $1,000,000 USDC. This acquisition includes a three-month lock-up period for all SNX tokens. Kwenta was once a Synthetix project that spun out in 2021. Will the legal challenges against Arbitrum’s governance power resolve in favor of the DAO or the victims?
