Pendle dominance amid liquidity shifts

Pendle maintains $8.5 billion in TVL through its unique principal and yield token splitting mechanism. The protocol manages significant liquidity from Ethena-linked pools while competing with Aura Finance and Spectra in the evolving yield and hedging landscape.

Pendle dominance amid liquidity shifts

Pendle holds approximately $8.5 billion in TVL, driven largely by Ethena-linked pools that account for 80% of the protocol’s total value. This liquidity continues to flow into the platform even as $1.24 billion in TVL was recorded as of September 15, 2026. The protocol splits yield-bearing assets like stETH or sUSDe into Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT). PT holders receive a fixed rate because they buy the asset at a discount, whereas YT holders capture the variable yield and rewards, such as EigenLayer points, until the asset reaches maturity.

Traders use these tools to manage different risks. PT holders face underlying asset depeg risk or smart contract vulnerabilities, but they face no price risk at maturity because the token redeems at par. YT holders face time decay risk, as the token value drops toward zero as maturity approaches. If the realized yield fails to exceed the implied yield, the YT buyer loses money.

Asset Type Principal Token (PT) Yield Token (YT)
Mechanism Zero-coupon bond structure Leveraged yield exposure
Expiry Value 1:1 redemption of underlying Zero
Primary Risk Underlying depeg Time decay and yield shortfall

The Yield Token side provides amplified exposure because a small outlay controls a larger amount of yield. For example, a $10,000 outlay on a YT priced at 0.06 controls yield on approximately $166,000 of the underlying asset. This 16x exposure makes YT a tool for those betting on yield spikes or points farming.

Competition in the yield space

Pendle competes with several protocols that approach yield differently. Aura Finance focuses on maximizing rewards within the Balancer and Curve ecosystem by using vote-escrowed tokens like vlAURA to boost Balancer LP yields. This strategy relies heavily on the emissions and gauges of those specific ecosystems. In contrast, Pendle provides a wide variety of assets and focuses on the separation of principal and yield.

Spectra provides a similar PT and YT split on Ethereum and Base, and it offers deeper coverage of Real World Assets (RWA). While Pendle leads in sUSDe and weETH pools, Spectra targets different niches. Users seeking flexibility and leveraged yield strategies across many liquid staking tokens find Pendle more effective than the concentrated utility of Aura.

Aura Finance users prioritize maximizing base yield for specific vaults, such as auraB_rETH_STABLE, by locking BAL and CRV. Pendle users prefer the ability to hedge or speculate on yield volatility. The choice depends on whether you want to maximize a single ecosystem’s rewards or trade the yield curve across multiple chains.

Institutional hedging and market shifts

The launch of Boros on Arbitrum in August 2025 introduced a way to trade funding rates in the perpetual futures market. This product targets the $198 billion open interest in the perpetuals market, allowing investors to hedge or profit from basis rate fluctuations. Boros expands Pendle beyond staking yields into the margin yield sector.

Recent shifts in the market show different trends in liquidity and yield. In the context of the Balancer ecosystem, Aura Finance users can redeem AURA for pro-rata treasury assets, with stage 1 redemption prices for certain tokens ranging from $0.008705 to $0.0223. Meanwhile, Pendle’s tokenomics use a veToken model where 40% of the supply remains locked for voting. The protocol distributes 80% of its swap fees to vePENDLE holders.

The complexity of Pendle’s AMM and its yield-aware curve can create difficulties for users. While PT holders can lock in a fixed rate, they must repurchase PT in new-expiry pools to roll positions, which requires paying the prevailing implied APY. Can Pendle maintain its $8.5 billion TVL if regulatory scrutiny increases for interest-bearing stablecoins?

The $PENDLE token experiences no selling pressure from the team or investors because the vesting schedule ended in September 2024. The protocol generates revenue from a 5% fee on its AMM and total yield. This revenue goes to vePENDLE holders, while 0.15% stays in the treasury. Professional traders continue to use the platform to execute yield curve arbitrage by comparing Pendle’s implied yields against CEX lending or Treasury bills.
